Ban Bu Dian (半步颠) @ Gurney Paragon Mall, Penang.

Ban Bu Dian has made its way to Gurney Paragon, bringing a taste of Sichuan cuisine to Penang. While prices here lean toward the higher side, the quality makes up for it. The dishes are well-executed with bold, multi-dimensional flavors that go beyond just being spicy— there’s depth and balance in the seasoning that makes the food stand out. For those who enjoy Sichuan cuisine with character and refinement, Ban Bu Dian is definitely a spot to check out.

Lao Cheng Du 老成都 @ Burmah Road, Georgetown, Penang.

Step in Lao Cheng Du 老成都, a fairly new restaurant at Burmah Road and you will be instantly transported to the 1950'... with old-school building and various knick-knacks from the past. We were amazed by the effort put in for the interior decor. On the food offering, the restaurant serves Dim Sum dishes with a small spread of Chinese dishes in the mornings; the usual Chinese small plates will commence at Noon. There are aplenty choices here- from appetizers to mains like Dumplings, Bao or even Noodle dishes. Price points are fair and reasonable, worth checking out if you are up for something new.

Wan Jia Dumpling House 万家饺子馆 @ Elit Avenue, Bayan Lepas, Penang.

A new addition to the China Chinese food scene in Penang- Wan Jia Dumpling House 万家饺子馆 at Elit Avenue (Bayan Lepas) is probably the only place in Penang that serves Wu Han Re Gan Mian, a dish that originated from Wu Han, China. But the place is in fact, specializes in serving home-made Dumplings but the menu also features some other China Chinese-delights too. The restaurant is manned by a couple from mainland China and the menu is written in Mandarin, so do bring along a Mandarin-literate partner when visiting this place.

Mao Master 川魂帽牌货冒菜 @ The One Mahsuri, Bayan Baru, Penang.

Mao Master 川魂帽牌货冒菜 at The One Mahsuri is probably the only place that specializes in Mao Cai (冒菜), a popular delicacy originated from Cheng Du. The cooking method is simple- cook all ingredients in a hotpot-like broth and serve various spices and Ma-La ingredients. You get to taste this at Mao Master, there are set meals and ala-carte options as well. On top of that, expect to find an array of China Chinese delights (mostly Sze Chuan-related) like Dumplings, Skewers etc. The restaurant adopts self-service so you are expected to pick up your own eating utensils as well as picking your own orders etc.

Soon Beijing Restaurant 顺北京餐厅 @ I-Santorini, Tanjung Tokong, Penang.

More choices for those who prefer China Chinese delights,  Soon Beijing Restaurant 顺北京餐厅 is the latest addition to i-Santorini at Tanjung Tokong (a few shops away from Baskin Robbins). The brand was previously known as Soon Ma La Hot Pot but has since rebranded to Soon Beijing Restaurant. The menu features quite a big variety of China Chinese delights- rice dishes, noodles, dumplings and stir-fries. The price points are of affordable range but the serving portion can be quite small for some. We have had some of the signature noodle dishes and we can't say we like them all...

Da Le Restaurant 大乐餐厅 @ Tanjung Bungah, Penang.

For a casual, quick and inexpensive China Chinese meal, make your way to Da Le Restaurant 大乐餐厅, conveniently located on the main street of Jalan Tanjung Bungah (opposite to Dalat International School). The new Chinese eatery offers a relatively big Chinese menu, featuring some Chinese delights from different regions- Sze Chuan, Zhe Jiang etc. There are also a handful of Chinese dishes familiar to most Malaysians (like Hainanese Chicken). The place is air-conditioned, and a meal here would not put a hole on the wallet. Worth checking out if you are in the vicinity.

Shu Xiang Ge 蜀湘阁 @ The Palazzia, Gelugor, Penang.

An extended branch of Chiow Lin Hotpot (at Abu Siti Lane), it's hard to notice Shu Xiang Ge 蜀湘阁; the restaurant can be found at The Palazzia, a commercial space right next to Jalan Bukit Gambir (down the hill if coming from Jalan Yeap Chor Ee/ before USM). This particular restaurant focuses on Sze Chuan-style stir fry dishes instead of hotpot. The menu is fairly small and it has quite a handful of affordable options (to attract the China Chinese students from USM). But the classics are still available, like the Kou Shui Ji, Shui Zhu Yu or Hui Guo Rou etc. The place is less-accommodating for big groups and some of the items on the menu tend to be not available so if you have plans coming in a big group, do make early reservations.

Dong Bei Jiao Zi 东北饺子 @ Lebuh Noordin, Georgetown, Penang.

For an inexpensive, value-for-money and filling North Eastern Chinese Dong Bei cuisine, try Dong Bei Jiao Zi 东北饺子 at Noordin Street. The Dong Bei cuisine specialist occupies a corner lot of Jalan C.Y. Choy and Noordin Street, offering a rather authentic Chinese fare. Expect a sweat-inducing experience as the place is not air-conditioned and the food menu consists of plenty of spicy options. The menu is fairly big with Dumpling, Noodle and Rice options... but are all reasonably priced. Not a shabby place to satisfy your cravings for Chinese Dong Bei food.

Feng Wang Fu Hot Pot 凤王府火锅 @ Gurney Paragon, Penang.

Whether chilly raining days or year end reunion meals, it is always pleasurable to enjoy a hot pot meal. Satisfy your tummy at one of the latest hot pot restaurants in town- Feng Wang Fu Hot Pot 凤王府火锅 at Gurney Paragon Mall. This new addition offers Sze Chuan-styled Mala Hot Pot along with other soul-comforting broths. The bold Chinese decor instantly brings you back to ancient China- from the seating arrangement to knick-knacks adorning the walls. The menu is quite extensive with various meat and seafood (missing Chicken though), service is most attentive at Feng Wang Fu but do expect the price points to be above average- expect to pay an average of Rm 80 per pax for a meal here.

Midnight Cat Noodle 夜猫下面 @ Tanjung Tokong, Penang.

Found in an unassuming spot within walking distance from the Tua Pek Kong Temple at Tanjung Tokong, Midnight Cat Noodle 夜猫下面 is one of the latest spots in Penang to get yourself a bowl of fiery hot, sweat-inducing Sze Chuan-influenced noodles. It is housed in an intimating old-school setting, walk in the place feels like taking a tour into someone's residence; the place is as homey as it gets. On the food offering, Midnight Cat Noodle offers noodle menu (not a big menu)... featuring an array of Chinese-influenced noodles, available in various dressing and toppings. Prices are generally affordable and the quality is of satisfactory but the place is not too accommodating for bigger groups of diners.

Sisters Mala Hot Pot 姐妹饭馆 @ D' Piazza Mall, Bayan Baru, Penang.

Having established at Bukit Mertajam, Sisters Mala Hot Pot 姐妹饭馆 is opening another new branch at D' Piazza Mall Penang. The new branch offers the same menu... the restaurant specializes in churning out Mala Hotpot styled dishes. Not to be confused with Hotpot (as in Steamboat), the Mala Hotpot-styled dishes here refer to the way of cooking... adding Mala-sauces to the dishes (more like a stir fry dishes to go with either noodles or rice). Like most Mala Hotpot carries quite a lot of options and choices... and the prices are pretty competitive as well. Worth checking out if you are a fan of these Mala dishes.

Mala Xiang Guo 无辣不欢 @ Burmah Road, Penang.

Unlike the traditional hot pot where you dip the raw ingredients into boiling hot broth to make it cooked, there is a new serving method- Mala Xiang Guo... to stir fry the ingredients with sauce, usually inspired by the Sze Chuan Mala Hot Pot (the same Chili-Peppercorn combo). Mala Xiang Guo 无辣不欢 is one of the specialists in town that offers such cooking... there is a self-pick counter where one chooses his preferred ingredients (the usual range of Yong Tofu products and fresh vegetables) and pay according to the weight of the ingredients. Prices for both meat and vegetables can be different and are displayed right on top of the display counter. Once done with the weighing, the server will then ask for the preferred cooking method (soup version is also available) and if Mala Xiang Guo is chosen, the spiciness shall be indicated (from mild to insanely spicy). Worth trying if you are into the Mala series... but do be caution on picking the ingredients and it has potential to break the budget by overly taking more ingredients than necessary.

No. 9 Noodle Bar @ Bukit Mertajam, Penang.

Previously occupied as G9 Dining House, the cafe has since relocated to Icon City and this existing lot at Maju Utama has been rebranded to No. 9 Noodle Bar.... offering a completely different menu than its predecessor. There are some minor changes to the interior decor as well... with more Chinese embellishments to set the tone. There's also a seemingly drinking bar at the side; with the rather dim setting, the place seems to be more suitable for a drink instead of proper meals. Anyway, the restaurant serves a Chinese menu... combining both local delights and Sze Chuan-influenced spicy Ma-La dishes. As interesting as the menu may seem, we thought the prices are on the higher side. The serving portion seems to be smaller than expected as well.

Duo Fu Noodle House 多福面馆 @ Union Street, Georgetown, Penang.

More food option for those working in the central business district of Georgetown, Duo Fu Noodle House 多福面馆 is the latest addition to the bustling business district. It offers a simple, straight-forward Chinese menu... featuring some noodle and rice dishes, as well as some Sze Chuan-influenced sides. Accordingly, the Chef comes from Sze Chuan and the proprietor hopes to offer affordably priced authentic Sze Chuan food. But do prepare for the havoc scene during peak hours as orders might get messed up and lackluster service (we were overcharged for 2 items so do check your bills).

Xiao Long Kan Hotpot 小龙坎老火锅 @ Sunrise Tower, Gurney Drive, Penang.

Of all the dining trends from China, Hotpot is probably the most favorited one; the Hotpot culture is also deeply rooted in most Chinese families in Malaysia. Hailed from Chengdu, China, Xiao Long Kan Hotpot 小龙坎老火锅 has recently expanded its Malaysian market by opening 3 new branches across the nation- 2 branches in central region and 1 up north at Penang (Sunrise Tower). With over hundreds of branches worldwide, the brand seeks to offer the best Hotpot experience to Malaysian diners, not only in terms of flavors but the entire dining experience as well. Using only the best quality herbs and spices imported from Chengdu as well as cooking method/ preparation used in mainland China (Master Chef is flown in from Chengdu to train the local team), the consistency is therefore maintained. Walk in the restaurant and you will feel instantly transported to China... from the interior decor to the eating utensils to how the servers dressed; everything seems to remind you that you are signing up for an authentic Chinese meal. Like a true hotpot restaurant, the menu comprises of many options- from different cuts of meats to various types of seafood, innards, meatballs or noodles. A true hotpot experience that any hotpot lovers should not miss.

Many Thanks to Xiao Long Kan for hosting us that evening.

Zhui Guo Zu Hot Pot (追锅族) @ Anson Cube, Georgetown, Penang.

Another new addition to Anson Cube along Anson Road (Georgetown) is Zhui Guo Zu Hot Pot (追锅族), a brand that is under the social media limelight. It has a special Teddy Bear-gimmick Hot Pot but that would require advance reservation; otherwise, the menu offers the standard Hot Pot ingredients along with some signature Soup bases. The variety is lesser than most established Hotpot restaurants but the prices are budget-friendlier. Though the place is fully air-conditioned, the ventilation is less-impressive and the seats are less-spacious and rather cramped for a hotpot restaurant.

Tasty Kitchen (张记味道) @ Tanjung Bungah, Penang.

For an inexpensive Chinese Sze Chuan dining experience, make your way to Tasty Kitchen (张记味道)... a newly opened but rather quiet, unpretentious eatery that specializes in offering authentic Chinese Sze Chuan-influenced delicacies. The restaurant at Jalan Tanjung Bungah (a stone's throw distance away from Tanjung Bungah market) has a huge seating space; with its simple and homey decor, the place is suitable for casual meals or family eat-outs. The menu is extensive... featuring some uncommon China-Chinese dishes as well as some familiar local stir-fry dishes. Diners have the option to choose between rice dishes or noodles... or even a warm, filling Chinese Bun. A good place to try something different without putting a dent on the wallet.

Beauty In The Pot (美滋锅) @ SkyAvenue, Genting Highlands, Pahang.

One of the latest additions to SkyAvenue at Resorts World Genting is Beauty In The Pot (美滋锅) which hits the spot- the resorts' all year round chilly weather would be perfect for hotpot, a go-to method to warm up. The newly opened hotpot specialist however, woos female guests with its name and special emphasis to "Beauty", offering Collagen-filled hotpot broth in a unique way. Set on the highest floor of SkyAvenue, guests visiting the hotpot restaurant will be awarded with fantastic view overlooking the hilltop, with occasional mist and hill fog painting the picture. But be prepared for a long wait if you are planning to visit this place during this holiday season, do queue and take the number earlier (at least an hour before your actual visit). It's also noteworthy that the hotpot restaurant offers 20% discounts on all hotpot ingredients after 10:30 pm (only applicable on Mondays to Fridays, excluding weekends and Public Holidays).

As You Like HK Chicken Pot 香港隨變燒烤麻辣雞煲 @ Chow Thye Road, Georgetown, Penang.

Hailed from Hong Kong, "As You Like HK Chicken Pot" rides on the Chicken Hot Pot craze and opened up a new branch in Penang. This is not their first Malaysia branch though, the first branch is located in KL area. The branch at Chow Thye Road attracted a great crowd during its first opening week; as hinted by the name, the place offers Chicken Hot Pot... ala Chinese Sze Chuan style. Though it is not uncommon in Penang, As You Like HK Chicken Pot fares better in terms of finer quality as well as cozier dining atmosphere. The prices however, are adjusted accordingly. Worth checking out if you are an ardent fan of Hot Pot and would like to pursue good quality food; not for those with tight budget though.

Ding Shi (鼎食) @ The Museum Hotel, Georgetown, Penang.

Don't be put off by the slightly odd name, Ding Shi (鼎食) is a family dining spot that offers both local Chinese food and Sze Chuan-influenced delights. Housed in The Museum Hotel (next to Roots  Dessert Bar and The Little Journeyman Cafe), Ding Shi offers a great variety of Chinese food; while most are local Chinese dishes, the place dishes out Sze Chuan-influenced items as well. Notable items include Steamed Dumplings, Sze Chuan Poached Fish, Sze Chuan Dried Hot Pot etc. The setting is comfortable but the place does not accommodate a lot... probably less than 8 tables in total. Prices are slightly on the higher side for the special Sze Chuan dishes (not that they are authentic and flavorsome); our recommendation is to skip the Sze Chuan-influenced dishes and go straight to the local dishes (the Chef seems to be a very experienced Chu Char Chef).
