Wan Jia Dumpling House 万家饺子馆 @ Elit Avenue, Bayan Lepas, Penang.

A new addition to the China Chinese food scene in Penang- Wan Jia Dumpling House 万家饺子馆 at Elit Avenue (Bayan Lepas) is probably the only place in Penang that serves Wu Han Re Gan Mian, a dish that originated from Wu Han, China. But the place is in fact, specializes in serving home-made Dumplings but the menu also features some other China Chinese-delights too. The restaurant is manned by a couple from mainland China and the menu is written in Mandarin, so do bring along a Mandarin-literate partner when visiting this place.

Wu Han Re Gan Mian 武汉热干面 (Rm 7)

Deep Fried Dumplings- Egg and Chives 鸡蛋韭菜饼 (Rm 3 each)

Boiled Dumplings- Egg and Chives 鸡蛋韭菜饺子 (Rm 10/ large)

Sze Chuan Chicken in Chili Oil 口水鸡 (Rm 12)

Soy Bean Skin Salad 凉拌腐竹 (Rm 8)

We started with the Boiled Dumplings, we thought they were nicely done. The filling was lightly seasoned and the Dumpling skin was at the right thickness. We had ours with some Black Vinegar. The Deep Fried version was a little greasy to our liking. The Dumpling Skin was something like puff pastry... not to our liking. On the Wu Han Re Gan Mian, it possessed a bold Sesame paste flavor with a sleek spiciness. The noodles were not as bouncy as we hoped; not too shabby for first attempt but not something that I would want to go all out to try. The Sze Chuan Chicken in Chili Oil was probably the best dish we had on that day. The seasoning was spot on and the texture was lovely. It was served cold but everything just hits the spot. The Soy Bean Skin Salad shared almost similar seasoning as the Sze Chuan Chicken but it was over-seasoned. We found the dish overly salty, though we like the idea of mixing Soy Bean Skin and Black Fungus together, for the addictive crunchy texture.
