Silkroad Lanzhou Beef Ramen @ The ZEN, Bayan Lepas, Penang.

A new China Chinese Mee Tarik restaurant has opened up at The Zen Bayan Lepas. Managed by a group of Chinese Chinese Muslim, the eatery specializes Lan Zhou hand-pulled noodles complemented by a selection of Chinese stir fries and barbecue items. The space is air-conditioned though the ventilation could be improved — diners may leave with a hint of cooking smell. Dishes are reasonably priced and come in generous portions, making it a decent option for a quick, fuss-free meal.

It's really hard to find good braised Beef Brisket in Penang and I am glad that HK Mong Kok Station serves some really good ones. The new kid in town runs like a Hong Kong Cha Chan Teng... offering similar Hong Kong delights (like Polo Bun, some Dim Sum dishes and noodles). The menu is not big for now, with their main focus in Hong Kong-styled Cart Noodles but it will be eventually expanded over time. Meals are affordable here but it may be a little tricky to locate the place, drive along Kedah Road and you will find the restaurant on your right (near to the junction to Transfer Road).

Ipoh remains as a popular destination for a quick respite, especially for Penangites... mainly due to its location and its vibrant food scene. The city has seen a booming in terms of new cafes and restaurants, this particular guide provides an insight on some of the latest Ipoh offering instead of the traditional, widely known tourist spots.

With many of us unable to travel overseas, a short local getaway is ideal when the travel bug bites. Ipoh (Perak) is an ideal destination for Penangites... with merely a short 1.5 hours drive away. The town is especially suitable for foodies to explore and has recently welcomed a spate of new cafes and eateries. These are some of the places that have never been featured on our Ipoh food blog entries:

Dai Cha Dim @ Pavilion, Kuala Lumpur.

Many would be spoilt for choice at Pavilion but our recent trip brought us to Dai Cha Dim, one of the latest additions to the mall. Found on level 6, the Chinese restaurant has a big Hong Kong-influenced Chinese menu with a mix of local delights (like KL Hokkien Mee and Yong Tofu etc) and an array of Dim Sum dishes. There are plenty of seats available and service is generally considered quick. Given that it is housed in an upscale mall, the charges are reasonable. More like a family restaurant suitable for all age groups. 

[Travel/ Food Guide] Itinerary to Taipei, Taiwan (台北，台湾) 2019

My last visit to Taipei was in 2016 under the invitation of Taiwan Tourism Bureau and my previous trip before 2016 was with travel agency so I've never had the opportunity to do self-guided tour. For this year, I've decided to make a short trip there and tour Taipei (and neighborhood cities) on my own pace (mode of transportation was mostly train). It was a leisure trip with mostly shopping and food; for this guide, it will consist of some interesting and worth-trying delicacies during the trip as well as some places of interest for sight-seeing. For this trip, we flew Malaysia Airlines via Kuala Lumpur and the flight was smooth with attentive Malaysian hospitality as always (though slight delay for our flight). As for accommodation, we stayed at Leo Foo Hotel (六福客栈) of Zhong Shan district with the closest MRT Station is Nanjing Sung Chiang Station (Exit 7). The place is rather strategic with easy access to many places of interest but the hotel itself is rather old and run-down. The room key was a nuisance (you may google it out) and the bed was not as comfortable as we would have hoped. Not exactly the type of hotel that we would recommend. Nevertheless, do check out the below food list:

Liu Bing Shi (六號冰室) @ Lorong Selamat, Georgetown, Penang.

Enjoy a taste of Hong Kong at this newly opened Hong Kong cafe along Lorong Selamat that serves up Hong Kong delicacies. Started in late 2018, Liu Bing Shi (六號冰室) tries to bring in the classic Hong Kong Cha Chan Teng dining experience... with the whole place turning into Hong Kong-styled coffee shop, offering a menu comprises of a variety of Hone Kong delights. Expect to see the instant noodles-alike dishes, Wan Ton Mee, Cheese Baked Rice, Soup Macaroni, Toasts and some Hong Kong street food. There were some hits and misses but still a decent place to ease your cravings for Hong Kong food.

Braised Beef Brisket Noodle @ Wei Liang Coffee Shop, Georgetown, Penang.

Having been in business for years, Wei Liang is certainly a local favorite; the Chinese-noodle joint is constantly crowded and never falls short of customers. Gourmands who are in the know will make their way there for their braised Beef Brisket Noodle, an incredibly tasty Cantonese-influenced delight that is uncommon in Penang. But it does not really matter if you are not a big fan of Beef, their Pork Rib Noodle and Pork Leg Noodle are good enough to please any stubborn palates. A series setback is however, the odd business hours... probably meant for early risers, the owner started the day early and the noodles often sold out by noon; so the best time is visit is probably in the early morning. Wei Liang Coffee Shop can be found at Jalan Kuala Kangsar, a short road right next to Kimberley Street and Keng Kwee Street.
