Mama Zen Hokkien Noodles 妈妈珍正宗福建面 @ i-Santorini, Tanjung Tokong, Penang.

Hailed from Alor Setar, Mama Zen Hokkien Noodles 妈妈珍正宗福建面 was born in the capital city of Kedah since 2014... churning out tummy-warming Hokkien Mee for almost a decade. The Hokkien Mee specialist has decided to expand its business operations to Penang (also Sungai Petani) at i-Santorini Tanjung Tokong... offering a more extensive menu that includes other noodle choices too (like Loh Mee, Scallion Oil Noodles etc). It offers an air-conditioned, comfortable space to dine-in; considering the affordable prices, the place is worth a look (especially for the folks staying in the neighborhood).

WuFoo Hokkien Prawn Noodles 五福福建虾麵·鹵麵 @ Gat Lebuh Presgrave, Georgetown, Penang.

For those who enjoy a bowl of filling yet contenting Hokkien Mee for supper should not be new to the name- WuFoo Hokkien Prawn Noodles 五福福建虾麵·鹵麵. Located at Gat Lebuh Presgrave, the place is often packed to the brim on Friday and Saturday evenings. It isn't entirely new, in fact, it has been around for more than 30 years. During the earlier days, the proprietor ran the business using a hawker cart but has since moved into a proper shop, offering diners a more comfortable space to dine-in. Using the same-exact recipe as 30 years ago, the broth is slowly cooked over coal fire, allowing it to simmer and fully accentuate the flavors from meat and Prawn. Another pull factor for this place is the flexibility to add on extra ingredients like Roasted Pork, Fish Balls, Prawns and Innards etc.

Breakfast at Pek Kong Cheng (大山脚伯公埕) @ Bukit Mertajam, Penang.

You may raise your eyebrow when someone tells you that there are a handful of delicious local delicacies surrounding a historical Chinese temple. Those who are in the know will tell you where to find good hawker food; in the heartland of Bukit Mertajam town, Pek Kong temple has become one of the important local landmarks. The area is often packed with cars and is especially busy in the mornings, you will find traders pushing their carts crossing the streets and parking space is especially scarce in the vicinity. However, the wait is worth-while and if you come here too late in the day, you will miss the opportunity to savor some of the best local delicacies. Below are some of the items that you should not miss:

1) Pek Kong Cheng's Famous Duck Meat Koay Chiap (伯公埕驰名鸭肉粿汁)
Business Hours: The Duck Meat Koay Chip is closed on every Monday. Opens from 6:30 am to 11 am.

Famous Jelutong Kim Leng Loh Mee @ Perak Road, Jelutong, Penang.

Ask the nearby folks on where to get a bowl of decent Loh Mee and many would recommend Kim Leng's. Weekend breakfast at this place is a common affair for the regulars; the Loh Mee stall is often beckoned by snaking queues. Despite the queues, the wait was not that excruciating for us; it only took them approximately 15 minutes to serve us. Kim Leng is famous for its thick, luscious Dark Soy braising gravy, packed with a "Ngoh Heong" punch. It should not be hard to locate Kim Leng... while driving on Perak Road (from Georgetown), Kim Leng should be on your right; housed in a corner coffee shop right next to Lintang Slim (there is a shop selling Chinese religious goods on the same row).

Hokkien Prawn Mee/ Wanton Mee @ Air Itam Market, Air Itam, Penang.

Walk until the end of the Air Itam Morning Market (across the bridge), you will come to this obscure and unpretentious coffee shop- Kapin, right next to a traditional Chinese Medicine Shop, facing the junction of Jalan Rambutan and Jalan Air Itam. It should be quite apparent as your attention will likely be caught by the long queue right in front of a stall selling Hokkien Prawn Noodle and it tends to be sold out by 9:30 am. Be sure to wake up early if you wish to have a taste of this Hokkien Prawn Mee. The Wanton Mee, on the other hand, is hand-made by using Bamboo Stick; or you might be more familiar with the name Jook-Sing Noodles/ Bamboo Noodles/ 竹升面 (read more information about the noodles here). It is not too commonly seen in Penang. This is definitely the place to have a quick breakfast especially if you are in the vicinity.

Million Loh Mee @ Farlim, Penang.

Loh Mee, direct translation would be Braised Noodles, a type of noodles topped with thick and flavorful gravy/broth. I am very particular when it comes to Loh Mee, it is either the broth is too watery or too thick to my liking, or the broth is too bland etc. I am a regular at one of the famous Loh Mee stalls in Jelutong area but now, I've found another place (which offers Loh Mee) which believe to be on par with it. Located at the shop houses at Farlim, Million Loh Mee not only serves Loh Mee, they do serve Koay Teow Th'ng, Pig's Trotter in Sweetened Vinegar and some Dim Sum dishes. Prices are very affordable and there are ample parking spaces available nearby.
