Hameediyah Restaurant @ Campbell Street, Georgetown, Penang.

Crowned as one of the best Nasi Kandars and the oldest Nasi Kandar establishment in Penang, Hameediyah has been serving gourmands for more than a decade. The restaurant has been churning out delicious curries since 1907... using recipes passed down from previous generations. The proprietor insists on using freshly ground herbs (no commercial paste is used); all Chefs are to follow the recipes and procedures accordingly. At any times, the restaurant would have around 35 types of curries on offer (apart from those made to order dishes on the menu) with their Beef Rendang, Chicken Kapitan, Ayam Bawang amongst the popular options. The good quality control is one of the key reasons that the restaurant could withstand the test of time. Over the years, the restaurant has served customers from all walks of life (both locals and foreigners) and a place for both casual dining or any family occasions.

Many Thanks to Hameediyah for hosting us that afternoon.

Aboo Backer @ Beach Street, Georgetown, Penang.

You should check out Aboo Backer if you enjoy a freshly made, hot and crispy Roti Canai; the Indian Mamak place is tucked in one of the heritage houses along Beach Street. The place looks inviting from far, with distinctive kampung Malay decoration; before you could step in, the chances of you bumping into the friendly, chatty proprietor are high. He will greet you and later recommend you on a series of their offering... which includes Malaysians' all time favorite delicacies- Roti Canai, Roti Bakar, Nasi Kandar etc. The place is related to Hameediyah, the oldest Nasi Kandar joints in Penang and the proprietor has plans to refurbish the upper floor of this place to a Nasi Kandar museum. Aboo Backer is located at the start of Beach Street, near to Prangin Road.

Teh Tarik Place @ Sunway Perdana, Seberang Jaya, Penang.

An upscale Mamak establishment, Teh Tarik Place is a franchised brand that has recently stepped foot in Butterworth, Penang. The cafe has a menu almost similar to most Mamak places except... the items are priced higher but in a reasonable manner. It has a young, vibrant interior decor but the staff was not well-trained. I did try to ask for some recommendations but to no avail. My orders were messed up either. When asked about my order... I was told that they have scrapped away the receipt. Teh Tarik Place occupies a lot at Sunway Perdana, the new shop lots behind Sunway Carnival Mall, Butterworth.

Hameediyah Restaurant @ Campbell Street, Georgetown, Penang.

Some fans of Hameediyah claimed that the flavors of the spices have tamed over the years but everyone would have to agree that Hameediyah is still one of the best places to enjoy a plate of authentic Penang Nasi Kandar. The 107-year old well-known Indian Muslim restaurant has recently revamped its menu and refurbished the restaurant, giving the public and regular patrons a fresh impression. The new strategy seeks to defy the conventional thinking of Nasi Kandar eateries being unhygienic and unpresentable and Hameediyah is proud to prove that they have done it. The walkway is clear, the toilet is clean, the dining hall is air-conditioned and the servers are friendly. However, the restaurant does not have plans on compromising the flavors; on the contrary, they are bringing back some dishes that have vanished over the years; explained by the management of Hameediyah. Diners can now enjoy the mouth-watering dishes of the yesteryears in a more comfortable and cleaner environment. On a side note, their extended outlet- Hameediyah Tandoori House is few doors away and is especially suitable to accommodate larger groups.

Many Thanks to Hameediyah for hosting us that evening.
