Roots Dessert Bar @ The Museum Hotel, Georgetown, Penang.

New kid on the block- Roots Dessert Bar, joins the plenitude of dessert cafes in Penang but the newly opened dessert bar sure has something up its sleeves- the menu comprises of an array of uncommon desserts has certainly come to merit the title... as a 'dessert bar'. Do not expect to find some conventional cakes here but instead, artisan desserts and pastries that would please any stubborn diners. Taste is not the only thing that they are focusing on, the presentation counts. Inspired to serve plated desserts, Roots pays great attention to its food presentation. Combination and flavors are meticulously paired and thought through; though Roots offers light snacks (jaffles) too but the desserts are probably their core competencies. So go ahead and order their desserts first. Roots Dessert Bar is a few doors away from The Little Journeyman Cafe at The Museum Hotel, off Transfer Road.

Matcha & Milk (Rm 18)

Tofu Cheesecake (Rm 17)

Every serving of dessert is a piece of art in Roots, the Matcha & Milk has shades of Panna Cotta but infused with Matcha and served with Red Beans, jeweled with a scoop of Matcha Ice Cream. The texture was creamy and smooth but it barely registered any sweetness. The sweetness comes from the familiar combination of Red Beans and Matcha Ice Cream, that any Matcha fiends would be able to relate.

There is no better study of texture than Roots' Tofu Cheesecake, not only that it was artfully presented, it was cleverly served with Honeycomb and Lime-infused Jelly. The Cheesecake was delicious with creamy and soft texture but we thought it could be cheesier. The crusty Honeycomb offered another crispy dimension while the acidic-jelly cuts through the creaminess of the cake. As expected, our untrained palate could not discern the Tofu element but we love the fact that the cake was brilliantly sweetened. As for those who need the extra sweetness to cheer up their day, the Gula Melaka comes to rescue.
