Tucked along Arratoon Road, REN at Arratoon is a pork-free café that exudes a warm, homey vibe with its simple, fuss-free decor. The menu carries a fusion of flavors—think Japanese-inspired dishes like Chicken Katsu with Japanese Curry alongside Western staples such as Pasta, Quesadillas, and Fish & Chips. For those with a sweet tooth, there are also dessert options like Waffles to wrap up the meal. With its comfortable setting and wallet-friendly prices, REN makes a nice casual stop for a laid-back meal in town.
We started off with Rice and Pour, a Japanese-inspired dish that resembles shades of Ochazuke where Tea-broth was served as a side. There were also 2 slabs of grilled Chicken patties served with Yakitori-like sweet sauce. The patties were expertly cooked- firm on the outside and juicy-soft inside, they were also reasonably seasoned and did not overkill with the sweet Japanese-inspired sauce. A pity that they did not use Japanese Rice for the distinctive chewier texture. The same for the Japanese Curry with Chicken Chop. The Japanese Curry was pretty much standard-okay but the Chicken Katsu was delicious... expertly seasoned and perfectly cooked, we must say we enjoyed the Chicken Katsu a lot. The Creamy Pumpkin Pasta was a disappointment. The Spaghetti was slightly over-cooked and the cream sauce was monotonous. We also did not like the ersatz Chicken Ham and thought the dish lacked of some crunch. It has potential but definitely needs some refinement.
