Located on the second floor of Ivory Plaza Gelugor, Chongqing Chinese Food 重庆美食 brings bold and authentic Chongqing flavours to Penang. Run by a Chongqing native, the eatery serves up a variety of noodle dishes like Liang Mian, Mi Xian, and Chongqing Noodles, alongside spice-laden grilled skewers. The place is not air-conditioned, but prices are wallet-friendly—great for a casual, flavour-packed meal that offers something a little different from the usual local fare.

The menu is quite noodle-focused, the signature Mi Xian carries the quintessential Chongqing Ma-La elements. There are few levels of spiciness to choose from. We opted for the standard version and it turned out to be bearably-spicy. The texture of the Mi Xian (Vermicelli Noodles) was good- silky smooth with al dente texture. There were not too much of Beef but the broth packed a flavorful punch. The 2 of us seemed to enjoy the Chongqing Cold Noodles more. Not exactly cold but more to room temperature, the noodles were expertly dressed with the spicy-concoction of theirs. The Ma-La element was definitely there but it felt more refreshing and less greasy. On the barbecue items- they tasted the same with the same seasoning and Chili flakes but they vary in terms of texture. Our favorite was the Grilled Rice Cake which had a crispy outside and chewy inside. The Squid was especially disappointing with a peculiar seafood stench.
