Ding Charcoal BBQ and steamboat @Straits Quay

This is a rather new restaurant located at one of the penang's new tourist attractions and shopping malls, this restaurant serves steamboat in a pretty creative way, which by displaying their steamboat ingredients on a kaiser/conveyor belt. The ingredients will then be carried around in the restarants where you can pick up any ingredients  you prefer and cook it yourself.

2 cooking stove can be found right in front of your table. The charcoal grilling pot and the ordinary soup steamboat pot will be served on top of the stove. It can be pretty heaty after the charcoal pot being served, try hunt for some beef or anything easy to grill while waiting for the set up to be done.

The restaurant itself was pretty clean and neat, all the plates were nicely displayed.

As all of you might aware, a good and appetizing sauce is very essential for a steamboat meal, fortunately, this restaurant offers 3 types of sauces--- sweet red chili and garlic paste, sourish green chili sauce and fried garlic oil. Personally, I would prefer the sweet red chili and garlic paste, I find that the green chili sauce was pretty spicy and a bit too sourish to go with those meats and seafood.

 Presentations of the steamboat ingredients.

Waiting for my meal.....mouth watering isn't it ?
2 bottles of drinks will be offered, which were the passion fruit on the left, and plum juice on the right, they were free flow btw. I would prefer the passion fruit juice as I felt that the taste for the plum juice was abit weird and definitely not "my cup of tea".
Some luring shots on the meat and seafood. The beef wasn't marinated, instead, you can add any seasonings that you prefer onto the meat itself. Paprika powder was added to the beef as shown in picture no. 1. Salt or any additional spices can be added too, depending on your own preferences.

These are on my must-try list, the mushrooms were thinly sliced, so they were pretty easy to be grilled. They can be pretty crunchy and most important, their fragrance was so irresistable, you can actually taste the natural sweetness in the mushroom slices. It just stays in your mouth for a few minutes, highly recommended.

I think the price was quite reasonable, (rm38.90++) per pax, buffet style. Additionally, they do offer free flow of ice cream, eat till u drop !! For reservation, you can call 04-899 7829. Its located on 1st floor in straits quay penang. You get to experience the unique fine dining in straits quay with a reasonable price, yet, with good services and quality food.

  1. Wow! seem is something new in Penang. There is plenty of steamboat (same style) in Penang but is bored and nothing special. Then, it is a new way of using conveyor belt for the dishes. Cool!

  3. hi joe ven, unlike seoul garden, the steamboat ingredients offered here are much better than seoul garden, they have the charcoal style BBQ too instead of the oily style of grilling the meat, its more healthy and less-oily in that sense

  6. Ding Charcoal BBQ & Steamboat Buffet - very bad experience with rude attitude management and esp the owner (fat tall guy + thin round eye lady).

Sigh! waste of energy talking to rascal restaurant owner. Very arrogant, rude and loud with foul hokkien language.Dun ruin your day or your family day there.
There are many more good places in penang to eat. Many have complain the rudeness of the owner to customers.
