Paris Penang Cafe @ Hammer Bay, Bayan Lepas, Penang.

At the end of the biggest roundabout near to Queensbay Mall is a paradise to seafood lovers. The Muslim-friendly place is commonly known as Hammer Bay, it serves some of the freshest daily catch ranging from fishes, squids or crustaceans. While you are in the vicinity, try not to miss this little kiosk nestled within Hammer Bay. Penang Paris Cafe is manned by a very friendly, chatty French-Muslim whom decided to move to Penang; which according to him, he serves the most authentic French Crepes at the cheapest rate you could find in Penang. This is just the humble beginning of his new business and thus, he is offering the best that he could; do not expect a very comprehensive menu but rather, a few variants of French Crepes.

Bittersweet Cafe @ Armenian Street, Georgetown, Penang.

*Bittersweet Cafe has since ceased its business operation.*

Near the famous mural art painting at Armenian Street, Bittersweet Cafe is especially worth-visiting for Waffle lovers. Nestled within the new Armenian Suite, the cafe has some really simple but cozy setting for you to wind down. We like the comfortable couches, plushy pillows, spacious seating and brightly lit interior, as though it exudes the warmth of home. On the downside, the place can be a little warm especially on a sultry hot afternoon and can be frustrating for the heat-intolerant. Also, the place does not have much to offer at the moment, their signature Belgium Waffle seems like the only dish that is worth-trying (cakes are likely to be obtained from other source). Nevertheless, this is the place where you can appease all Waffle and Ice Cream cravings, at reasonable prices.

Mee Udang/ Assam Laksa @ Taman Sahabat Indah, Teluk Kumbar, Penang.

Teluk Kumbar is well-known for its fresh yet inexpensive seafood, and the Mee Udang found in Teluk Kumbar is especially known as the best of its kind. Hidden within the housing area of Teluk Kumbar, this humble Mee Udang stall is slowly getting attention from the nearby residents. Mee Udang is not the only food that you can find here, this place sells pretty decent Assam Laksa too. Also, the prices are friendlier than those you can find in town. However, I would not make a special trip out there but if you are in the vicinity, this is a very good place for you to grab a quick fix. To find this place, drive along Jalan Gertak Sanggul, upon reaching Khun Thai and Hai Boey Seafood, you will notice a housing area on your right. Turn into Tingkat Pasir Belanda 5 or 6, and navigate your way to Tingkat Pasir Belanda 8.

Giffy Pizza @ Burma Road, Georgetown, Penang.

Pizza lovers can now appease all Pizza cravings at this authentic Italian Pizza joint without putting a dent on the wallet. Situated right smack in town, Giffy Pizza is a newly opened Pizza joint manned by two friendly Italians. It can be really easy to miss the place though, Giffy can be found at the intersection between Penang Road and Burma Road, opposite to Loke Thye Kee. The snug and unpretentious Pizza joint takes in order either by walk-in or delivery. To dine in, traipse yourself up the steep flight of stairs and there will be a fully air-conditioned dining area with cozy setting awaits you. The menu is rather simple but we love the made-to-order service as the freshness is guaranteed.

Brew Cafe (啡礼) @ Autocity Juru, Perai, Penang.

The month of August welcomes a new cafe to the already clamoring crowd at Autocity Juru. The newly opened cafe has quite an impressive interior decor in shades of wooden beam which exudes an enormously pleasing sense of tranquility. The al-fresco dining area allows diners to dine-in amid of a small courtyard, but the heat-intolerant would probably prefer the air-conditioned dining area. Menu is simple and earnest, with a few types of Breakfast dishes and some all-day Mains. Brew Cafe is located near the entrance to "Shop in D'Park" at Autocity Juru.

Auwawa Cafe @ Lim Lean Teng Road, Greenlane, Penang.

Amidst the serene neighborhood and somewhere relatively quieter from town, Auwawa is a newly opened Cafe right opposite to Han Chiang College. The cafe is definitely student-friendly, reason? It has simple and inexpensive menu with yummy snacks, homely and no-frills ambiance. However, this may not be an ideal place for those who wish to have a decent meal as Auwawa offers some Sandwiches only, with a few types of Cakes and their signature Potted Ice Cream. While this particular cafe may not have the perfect setting or menu but we thought this may be a decent place for you to grab a quick caffeine fix without needing to travel to the heart of Georgetown.

Vivo Pizza @ AEON Mall, Alma, Bukit Mertajam, Penang.

The long-anticipated wait is over as AEON Mall at Alma (of Bukit Mertajam) has finally opened its doors to the public and amongst the new spade of tenants that have moved in, Vivo Pizza is definitely one of the worth-checking out ones. The well-established Pizza joint has more than 12 outlets in the country and this is the first outlet in Northern Malaysia. As the name of the restaurant would have hinted, Vivo Pizza specializes in serving Pizzas, ranging from the commonly seen savory Pizzas to the uncommonly found sweet dessert Pizza. Prices are pretty standard-average but Vivo Pizza stands out by offering Pizzas that are 33% larger than its competitors. While I have yet to try the food at other branches but there were some hits and misses during our visit; I could not tell if it was the usual way how they did it or the fact that they have yet to stabilize their operations. Nevertheless, if you are in the vicinity and have a sweet tooth, be sure to check out their dessert pizza. Vivo Pizza is strategically located near the main entrance (ground floor) of AEON Mall, facing The Cruises Steak House and a stone's throw distance away from Jusco.

[Revisit] DCOVA @ Logan Heritage, Bishop Street, Georgetown, Penang.

A couple months since my previous visit to DCOVA, I was delighted to know that the cafe has devised a sturdy menu. It dishes out mains now, with a few types of home-made desserts. We were deeply impressed by the redefined quality of Pasta dishes; additionally, the cafe takes a step further by offering a whole new blend of Coffee Beans right now- Papa Palheta Coffee Beans sourced from Singapore. Coffee lovers should not be too new to the brand; I am no coffee connoisseur but some tasting notes shared by other friends were: balanced, smooth and not too acidic. A wonderful place not only for a meal but to have a sip on their freshly brewed Cup of Joe too! For my previous blog entry about DCOVA, kindly visit the link here.

Many Thanks to DCOVA for extending the invitation.

Route 9 @ Bishop Street, Georgetown, Penang.

Finding a good restaurant that serves delicious and inexpensive Western food has always been a daunting task for me but things will be easier with the opening of Route 9. Situated right smack in the heartland of Georgetown, diners can now satiate their cravings for a better quality Western dishes without putting a dent on the wallet. Opened for just a couple of weeks, the place has already proven to be a popular dining place in the neighborhood. Decor is minimalist in Route 9, in shades of white with some grey accents but what makes the place stand out is the extremely affordable prices. You may find a dish (ala-carte order) from as low as Rm 13.90 or to grab a decent steak at Rm 22. To find Route 9, locate Goh Kaki along Bishop Street, or Sentral College on the same road. Route 9 is located next to Goh Kaki.

The Famous Mee Udang (Aur Gading) @ Sungai Dua, Seberang Perai, Penang.

Known to many as the famous Sungai Dua Mee Udang, Aur Gading is truly a must-visit place for seafood lovers. The place has been there for quite some time and has since, become many patrons' favorite place to satiate their cravings for Mee Udang. Prices may be a little higher but they commensurate with quality and freshness. To get there, take the North South Expressway from Penang to Sungai Dua. Once you have turned into Sungai Dua, drive straight until you find a junction. Take the road on your right and drive straight into the housing area. You will notice an AmBank on your left while you are on the way. Drive until the very end, until you see a bridge. Do not drive up the bridge as Aur Gading is tucked below the bridge, signboards indicating directions to the place should be easily noticed when you are in the vicinity.

Caffeine Chemistry Coffee @ Chime Heritage, Georgetown, Penang.

Caffeine Chemistry Coffee is yet another new tenant that entered the newly refurbished heritage building- Chime Heritage. Unlike The Haven Harbour, Caffeine Chemistry Coffee walks a slightly different path. The cafe is more casual and the whimsical interior decor exudes a younger and energetic vibe. We glad that the cafe tries to offer something different than the ubiquitous cakes. They do not serve any mains at the moment but they do serve some light snacks and Salad for the health-conscious. While the seats may not be very comfortable, we were well-pleased with the friendly and attentive service. A decent place to have a quick chat with your friends and have your caffeine fixed.

Private Dining- Burmah 108 @ Burmah Road, Georgetown, Penang.

Who would have guessed that there was a private-dining nestled within an unassuming and unpretentious house in the heartland of Georgetown? It took me a while to find the place since there was not any sign board. Burmah 108 is the brainchild of three primary schoolmates- Sharon, Hooi Chin and Chui Lim; the trio invites guest Chefs from other states/ countries to host a private dining events and private cooking classes. Food enthusiasts can also rent the kitchen for cooking demonstrations or dining hall to host any private functions or exhibitions. As for the month of July (2014), they were pleased to have guest Chef- Chef Ming Siew on board. The event "A Taste of Nyonya by Ming Siew" gives diners an opportunity to savor all the authentic Nyonya dishes and flavors of the yesteryears. Read more information about Chef Ming Siew here.

The upcoming private dining event will be held in August (23rd and 24th of August 2014) and a Penang-born guest Chef- Chef Anderson Ho, who is currently residing in Singapore, will make his appearance. Diners can expect an array mouth-watering home-style food.

Many Thanks to Burmah 108 for extending the invitation.

The Haven Harbour Cafe @ Chime Heritage, Georgetown, Penang.

The newly revamped Chime Heritage along Jalan Bawasah welcomes a spade of new tenants which comprises of cafes and restaurants. The Haven Harbour Cafe took the prominent spot, a corner lot of the premise. I would classify The Haven Harbour more of a restaurant in lieu of a cafe as it serves quite a selection of Pasta dishes and some mouth-watering home-made desserts. Prices may be a little higher as compared to other cafes, but they commensurate with higher quality ingredients. More items and dishes are to be added onto their menu soon. They may not have the perfect setting or dining atmosphere, but their attentive service and sturdy menu are worthy for your visit.
