Korean Cafe Shwimpyo @ Victoria Street, Georgetown, Penang.

After 10 years of building a loyal following, Shwimpyo Korean Cafe has expanded to a new outlet along Victoria Street, bringing its familiar pork-free, Muslim-friendly Korean fare closer to the Georgetown crowd. The menu is slightly broader, featuring staples like tteokbokki, dakgalbi and hearty stews, with flavours that lean bold and comforting rather than refined. The space is simple yet comfortable, and prices remain reasonable, making it an easy, casual spot for a satisfying Korean meal.

Hansang Dakgalbi Set (Rm 33)

Beef Kimchi Stew (Rm 23)

Tteokbokki (Rm 24)

The Set Meal offers great values- generous serving portions with a good selection of sides. Side dishes can be refilled once. We had the Dakgalbi Set, Chicken Breast was used instead of thigh. The texture was still okay, but our preference was still Chicken Thigh in this case. The rest of the sides did manage to complement the Korean dining experience. The Kimchi Stew carried a bold acidity, presumably from the fermented Cabbage. It was very flavorful and definitely packed a powerful spicy punch. Diners get to choose the level of spiciness and we had one level lower than the spiciest. We could feel the heat but still within the bearable range. Tteokbokki was a little disappointing- the texture was not as chewy as we would have hoped... the same for the thickness of the sauce.
