Tucked into a refurbished warehouse on Soo Hong Lane, Gilda presents itself as an airy, modern dining destination in George Town. The warehouse-like space allows bright natural light to flood the space, creating a welcoming yet cozy spot for diners to explore their specially concocted flavor-combo. It is definitely a solid pick if you’re looking to step beyond casual bites and into a thoughtful dining experience in Penang.
We started with the Sourdough Toast with Caramelized Onion Mousse and it was lovely. The Toast was expertly toasted to the right crunch while the Caramelized Onion Mousse offered the right amount of saltiness and creaminess. Personally, I would prefer a bit of bite like the actual Caramelized Onions for the extra bite. The Fries were equally delicious, mainly due to the creamy-umami Nori Aoili; something different than the usual Truffle Fries. For mains, we liked the Prawn Linguine more than the Grilled Seabass. The Linguine was perfectly cooked to al-dente; it has a good depth of umami thanks to the Anchovy Butter and Prawn Chili Oil Gremolata for that slight herbaceous touch. The Grilled Seabass was fine but a little overly safe in our opinion. Extra marks for the Kaffir Lime Oil to introducing a nice zesty touch to the fish. We wrapped up the meal with Pumpkin Pudding... almost similar to Creme Brulee but Pumpkin version. The Pumpkin flavor was bold and worked very well with the creamy Mascarpone that introduced a sleek salty touch to it.
