Chooi Lim Koo 醉林居 @ Air Hitam, Penang.

Tucked away from the bustling Jalan Air Hitam, Chooi Lim Koo 醉林居 is hidden at the small alley next to Kek Lok Si Hospital. The place can be found on a slope with a few parking spaces available. Chooi Lim Koo offers a small menu offering only 2 types of mains- Penang Hokkien Mee and Char Koay Teow, with some local beverages and Toasts. Save for the al-fresco area, the restaurant is air-conditioned and offers a comfortable space for a quick meal.

Char Koay Teow with Chicken Egg (Rm 9/ small)

Hokkien Mee (Rm 9/ small)

Steamed Bread with Kaya Butter (Rm 3.50)

As soon as we stepped in the place, we could smell the aroma of the Hokkien Mee and at the moment, we were convinced that their Hokkien Mee was good. True enough, the broth carried a bold crustacean flavor with a good umami. The broth can be quite spicy for some but it should be fine for Penang standard. The Hokkien Mee had all the boxes ticked, quite a standard and delicious Penang Hokkien Mee. The Char Koay Teow paled in comparison with the Hokkien Mee. It had the quintessential Wok Hei but the seasoning was slightly weak (you can probably judge from the color). The Steamed Bread with Kaya Butter was nothing out of the ordinary. But not a bad place to stop by for a delicious bowl of Penang Hokkien Mee.
