Hailed from Juru (Bukit Mertajam), Zheng Xiang Yam Rice 正香芋饭 was established since 1984; the brand has since garnered many fans over its signature Yam Rice. Zheng Xiang has recently opened up a branch at Rangoon Road and it is definitely more convenient for those staying on Penang island. The menu is simple- offering the classic combo of Yam Rice and mixed Pork Soup... with a new addition of Seafood option. The place is air-conditioned so expect to pay a little more as compared to hawker-range... for the more comfortable dining setup.
The signature Yam Rice comes with the quintessential shiny-look, beautifully coated with the promising color of dark Soy Sauce. Just the look of it had me convinced on its quality. True enough, the Yam Rice was very good- reasonably seasoned with good texture (not overly moist). It would be even better if they can include more Yam pieces to the rice. The Mixed Pork Soup carried an indelible sourness due to the pickled Mustard Greens, the soup itself was soul-comforting. It was expertly seasoned with a deep meaty-flavor. The Grouper Soup was almost identical but with less Pork notes. The Fish was very fresh and thickly cut. Freshness aside, Rm 25 seems a bit steep for the portion. The braised Eggs and Tofu were great addition to the meal nevertheless.
