Shinwa Ramen @ Pantai Molek, Tanjung Tokong, Penang.

Shinwa Ramen is one of the latest Japanese Ramen joints in Penang, it occupies one of the bungalows at Pantai Molek (sharing the place with The Palm). The menu is fairly small and it specializes in offering Japanese Ramen and Japanese sides. Limited seating but the interior decor is very much Japanese-inspired (with a small Japanese garden and classic Japanese Ramen shop seating). Shinwa Ramen used to serve only one type of Ramen- Tonkotsu Ramen but it has recently introduced its A5 Wagyu Shoyu Ramen. Unfortunately, there are plenty of rooms for improvements at this place as far as food quality is concerned. We'd think there are better options out there when it comes to Ramen.

Omi Beef A5 Wagyu Shoyu Ramen (Rm 28)

Hakata Tonkotsu Ramen (Rm 25)

Breaded Shrimp (Rm 15)

Takoyaki (Rm 9)

We started with the side orders, the Breaded Prawns were disappointing to start with. The Prawn meat was soft and mushy, almost like those frozen Prawn Tempuras. Takoyaki was fine but there was not Taco (Octopus) in each of the Takoyaki we tasted. Ramen wise, the A5 Wagyu Shoyu Ramen was alright. Not that the broth was good nor the Ramen has a good, springy texture. At least it tasted averagely-okay. The beef slices were good though. The real disaster was the signature Tonkotsu Ramen. If you can zoom into the photos, you would realize there were some pork fats floating on the broth. The broth was amazingly porky, like a strong blow of pork stench hitting you on the face... probably the porkiest we have ever had. Seasoning-wise, it was fine. But for someone who is not a huge fan of pork, this was a disaster. We struggled to finish the Tonkotsu Ramen (despite trying to "rescue" it by adding Shichimi Togarashi powder and Sesame Seeds).
