Tanuki Japanese Canteen, a neighborhood Japanese restaurant at Golden Triangle 2 has been around for quite some time but the place has drawn a lot of attention lately on social media. The place specializes in Japanese-inspired dishes like Omu Curry Rice, Udon, Gyoza and some rice dishes. The interior is simple, offering a comfortable space for family diners or those seeking for a convenient spot for a quick fix. The place is especially busy on weekends (lunch or dinner) so do plan your visit accordingly.
Unfortunately we had to wait for quite some time before our orders were served. The XXL Fried Drumstick Curry Rice came in a huge portion- the rice portion was too big and the Curry sauce was too scarce; the whole dish went too dry towards the end. The Fried Chicken was alright- crisp with tender meat. A pity that the Curry was somewhat watered down and not thick enough to our liking. We were also left underwhelmed with the absence of some Japanese pickles. The Nabeyaki Zosui (Japanese Rice Soup) was somewhat interesting, the Dashi stock was good with umami-taste. There were some Carrots, Chicken and Garlic in the Zosui; it was quite monotonous towards the end and again, they were too generous with the rice. The rice ended up soaking all the soup, we struggled to finish the dish. The homemade Gyoza was good, we like the freshness of the dumpling skin. Slightly expensive for the portion though. Some hits and misses, more like a Japanese-inspired restaurant rather than a Japanese restaurant.
