Niang Nyonya Cuisine @ Prangin Lane, Georgetown, Penang.

Owned by the same group that owns Thara Penang, Niang runs a slightly different concept- offering classic and traditional Nyonya flavors to the hungry diners in Penang. Step in the place and you will be amazed by the interior decor- with red bricks on the wall and colorful paper umbrella adorning the ceiling as well as some mismatched knick-knacks that complete the place. The menu is fairly small and limited, only a handful of Nyonya delights (some timeless dishes like Inche Kabin, Kerabu etc are not available). Niang can be found right opposite to Thara Penang on the same street.

Curry Stingray (Rm 38)

Otak-Otak (Rm 18)

Perut Ikan (Rm 24)

Acar (Rm 18)

Cendol (Rm 12)

We started off with Acar- pretty standard with a sharp acidity and mild heat, vegetables were crunchy with a generous sprinkle of crushed Peanuts. The Otak-Otak was a slight disappointment- while the flavors were there (with fish chunks), we thought it was slightly over-seasoned. Our favorite of the day was the Curry Stingray- Gulai Tumis style. The fish was fresh with pristine white flesh; the Curry was delicious with a good balanced medley of spicy, sour and savory notes. We must say we enjoyed the dish very much. The Perut Ikan was not too shabby, they were generous with the Pineapples which gave the dish its distinctive soul (along with the tangy Tamarind juice). There were some Prawns in it too. We ended the meal with Cendol- perfectly creamy (thanks to the Santan) and irresistible Gula Melaka with a nice smoky touch.
