Ice On You Dessert Cafe @ China Street, Georgetown, Penang.

Georgetown sees a new dessert wave recently, with many new dessert parlors opening in town. Amongst the new ones, Ice On You Dessert Cafe at China Street specializes in serving South Korean-inspired shaved Ice (Bingsu). On top of the icy cold sweet treat, the cafe also offers a simple dessert Toast menu. The cafe at China Street (right next to Allianz Insurance building and near to the junction of Beach Street) offers a cozy-comfortable space for diners to enjoy their share of desserts or to recharge over refreshing desserts. If you do like a bowl of good Bingsu, do give this place a try.

When it comes to Bingsu, the best flavor to test the depth of the waters will be the classics. We were told by the friendly server that the cafe imports the roasted Soybean Powder directly from South Korea. The milk-based shaved Ice was good, slightly sweetened and very light on the palate. But we thought the layer of the roasted Soybean Powder was a little too fine to our liking. We also did not like the presence of Vanilla Ice Cream here as well as the absence of the Korean Rice Cake (Tteok). We've certainly had better ones elsewhere. But we were impressed by their Mango Cheese Cake Bingsu. It was generously topped with beautiful fresh Mangoes and a slice of creamy-soft Cheese Cake. Some Mango syrup was served too. The overall combo worked and we especially enjoyed the creamy Cheese Cake here, it certainly made things better. The Gula Melaka Bingsu was just alright, the smoky-sweet Gula Melaka flavor was quite mild and overpowered by the Lotus biscuits. Not shabby as a Bingsu itself but did not really suit the theme well.
