Neighbourwood Restaurant @ Jalan Kulim, Bukit Mertajam, Penang.

"Friendly establishment that serves good food at reasonable prices" is a recognition given by the Michelin Bib Gourmand to the Neighbourwood Restaurant at Bukit Mertajam earlier this year. A stone's throw distance away from Bukit Mertajam's St Anne's Church (few shops away from Public Bank Jalan Kulim), this modern European casual dining spot has quickly gone into the spotlight ever since the debut of Michelin Guide Penang 2023. The menu changes regularly and focuses on barbecue-style dishes; there are big plates for sharing as well as smaller plates for starters, with a handful of dessert choices. Early reservation is suggested if you are coming in a big group. A place worth checking out if you are in the vicinity.

Fork-Crushed Potato (Rm 20)

Roasted Cauliflower (Rm 25)

NBW Caesar Salad (Rm 22)

Brinjal Bruschetta (Rm 15)

Bread and Butter (Rm 10)

We started off with their homemade Sourdough Bread and Butter, we love the crusty-soft Sourdough but a pity that the Butter was not up to par. We would prefer a saltier, creamier version with a slight herbaceous flavor. For a change, we also tried their Brinjal Bruschetta. It has some diced grilled Brinjal dressed with Anchovy and Balsamic Vinegar, served with sour-cream like sauce. The concoction was refreshing- with a mellow but discernible Balsamic fragrance as well as a sleek acidity. Not bad for a change but definitely not our favorite. The NBW Caesar Salad was a completely new version for us- with Seaweed added. We love the crunchy elements here and thought it was a nice addition to the starters.

For mains, we had the Half Chicken and Tiger Prawn Spaghettini. The former one was marinated and served with Garlic Miso, the flavor combo was easy-going with a delightful smoky essence. The Chicken was nicely grilled and worked perfectly with the sides. We found ourselves enjoying the Tiger Prawn Spaghettini more. The pasta was skillfully cooked with al-dente texture and dressed in rich crustacean sauce. It possessed a bold smoky crustacean flavor and delicately seasoned. We thought it was the best dish we had on that particular visit. The sides were great but nothing to shout over, more like tummy-fillers. Some hits and misses, but if you are looking for a comfortable spot with above average food, this is a good option in the neighborhood.
