Sam Gye Bab @ Golden Triangle, Relau, Penang.

Probably the first and only Sam Gye Tang specialist in Penang, Sam Gye Bab at Golden Triangle has been around for quite a while. The place is well-received by the folks staying in the neighborhood, with plenty of take-outs and delivery orders throughout the day. The small Korean menu features their signature flame-grilled Korean Chicken and Korean Ginseng Chicken Soup as well as some Korean delights (like Toppokki, Doenjang Jigae etc). Price points are lower than most established Korean joints but don't expect top-notch dining experience here. More like a place for a quick, inexpensive and casual Korean fix in the neighborhood.

Flame-Grilled 1/4 Chicken (Rm 13.90) with Extra Corn Cheese (Rm 4.90)

Sam Gye Tang/ Korean Ginseng Chicken (Rm 17.90)

Spicy Doenjang Jjigae/ Korean Spicy Soybean Paste Soup (Rm 14.90)

Toppokki (Rm 4.90/ add on)

The Ginseng flavor of the Sam Gye Tang was less-bolder here at Sam Gye Bab, but the seasoning was spot on and the Chicken was beautifully cooked with a fork-tender texture. The addition of Glutinous Rice added a starchy touch to the broth while the Red Dates introduced a hint of sweetness. The soup was served to us piping hot with a bowl of White Rice. Likewise, the Spicy Doenjang Jjigae was also very good. The flavors were good and we were delighted to find some Flower Clams, Egg Tofu in it. It worked very well with White Rice. For something more playful, go for their Flame Grilled Chicken. We opted to add some Corn Cheese and Korean Rice, which were served on a sizzling pan. The Chicken was delicious and well-marinated, it carried a hint of smokiness and an addictive sweet-spicy flavor (probably from Gochujang sauce). Not bad for a change but if you are looking for a classic Korean spread, this is not the place.
