Iwa Kushiyaki Japanese Cuisine @ Auto City, Juru, Penang.

Iwa Kushiyaki Japanese Cuisine at Auto City was a lucky serendipity which we did not plan for; we did not even notice of its existence despite the restaurant has been there for quite some time. The Japanese exterior looks exactly like an Izakaya which may paint a picture on the menu but the actual offering is far beyond an ordinary Izakaya. While the place offers alcohols, the menu features some mains and a wide variety of Japanese delights as well. Seasonal items are not on the menu, do check with the servers on the specialties. Food quality is promising and food items are reasonably priced, a place suitable for gatherings over small plates and alcohols.

Fresh Oysters (Rm 15 each)

Grilled Japanese Mochi (Rm 6)

Grilled Eggplant (Rm 4)

Grilled Chicken Breast (Rm 4)/ Grilled Okra (Rm 3)/ Grilled King Mushroom (Rm 3)/ Grilled Cumin Lamb (Rm 6)

Stir Fried Miso Ramen (Rm 18)

Salmon Ikura Yamakake (Rm 38)

Cheesy Dashi Tamago Yaki (Rm 16)

Grilled Squid (Rm 38/ Shioyaki)

We started our meal with their seasonal offerings- Fresh Oysters said to have imported from the US. They were served with a dash of Japanese Soy Sauce and a small pinch of minced Garlic. The Oysters were fresh and plump... we thought they were very good and reasonably priced. Another seasonal item was the Grilled Squid... we had ours served in Shioyaki... grilled with Salt. For 38, we thought it was well-priced considering the portion and the serving quality, some Pepper Salt was served as a side and the Squid was not heavily salted; a flexible option for those who prefer saltier bites. The skewers were okay, none of them disappoint thought we did not like every single item. Notable item on their grilled menu is the Grilled Japanese Mochi... served over condensed milk- chewy texture with a charred aroma while the condensed milk gave it a creamy, sweet flavor. The mains are not to be forsaken, both Stir Fried Miso Ramen and Salmon Ikura Yamakake were beyond amazing. Unlike the traditional Miso Ramen, the improvised Stir Fried Miso Ramen comes in 2 options- spicy or non spicy. We had the spicy one and we were mind-blown; the sauce was lip-smacking with a gentle heat while the noodles retained its springiness. All other elements were perfectly balanced except... the Miso flavor could be bolder; but it did not really matter, the dish was still amazing. Like-wise, the Salmon Ikura Yamakake appealed to us for its generously cut Salmon Sashimi and expertly cooked Japanese Rice. The freshness spoke for itself and enjoyed every bits of it.
