Canteen 食堂 @ Pekaka, Gelugor, Penang.

Yearning for some spicy Tom Yam from our neighbour country since the beginning of lockdown? You can now beat the cravings by visiting a new Thai restaurant near Pekaka Square. Canteen 食堂 specializes in Thai Tom Yam Mama Mee, with a small variety of Thai delights that include a few Rice dishes as well as some sides (like crispy Thai Pork Rinds etc). The price points vary but typically in the range of Rm 10 to Rm 20, not too steep (but the serving portion could be larger for that price tag). Worth checking out only if you are a fan of Thai Tom Yam.

For a start, we had their new item- Thai Style Salmon Sashimi... fresh Salmon Sashimi swimming in a pool of Thai spicy and sour sauce, served with a few slivers of raw Garlic. The taste was alright- pretty straight forward and it was a refreshing start... but I am not sure if I am willing to pay paying Rm 18.90 for a few pieces of Salmon Sashimi again. For main, we had their Mini Signature Tom Yam Noodles and Seafood Kerabu Tang Hoon; the former one was rich and flavorful, served a generous amount of toppings like Roasted Pork, Squid, Prawn, Meatballs and an Egg Yolk. The noodles were nicely cooked but we thought it was not quite spicy enough, at least not as spicy as we would have hoped. The Seafood Kerabu Tang Hoon on the other hand, was a disappointment. It stroke us with jolting sourness and the dish was pretty flat, we struggled to finish this dish.
