[Travel/ Food Guide] Itinerary to Davos, Switzerland ( 达沃斯,瑞士) 2019- PART 1

One of the popular places for skiing, Davos (within the Graubunden region) is approximately 2.5 hours away from Zurich by train ride. Davos, Switzerland is the highest lying city in Europe (more than 1,500 meters above sea level), surrounded by stunning mountain views. The place is also made known as the host city of the annual World Economic Forum that welcomes a great number of politicians, government officials, business leaders every year. While there are many outdoor activities that one can partake, the food scene is equally exciting and explore-worthy:

It's common to see wooden farm houses being built on the hill slope in Switzerland but imagine you could visit one someday? Make your dream come true by visiting the Konrad Farm... a short 10 minute drive away from Davos Klosters and located at Sertigtal, 1700 meters above sea level.

The family owns a typical Swiss farm where livestock is kept and at the same time, processing numerous traditional products from Graubunden. Every angle from this farm house in the neighborhood is picture-perfect and its definitely one ideal way to experience the lifestyle of a local Swiss farmer. Even if you are not keen on the fresh produce, we thought it is worth dropping by just because of the view and its close-distance to nature.

The family also runs a small farm shop where visitors can find small but fine Swiss kitchen treasures. One can find plenty of home-made goodies inside or even freshly baked pastries. The proprietor's family members own various farms in different locations of Switzerland. For instance, the daughter has fresh apples in her farm and she would deliver back to her mom's. The proprietor can then make Cider or Dried Apples out of the Apples received.

Found in Monstein, a small village with 15-min train ride away from Davos, Bierbrauerei Monstein is one of the highest breweries in Europe and is home to the famous Monstein Beer. It was founded in October 2000 and was the first show brewery in canton Graubunden. The place is situated in the former village dairy, a 100 year old building strategically located in the middle of Walser Village of Monstein. Beer lovers can partake in a guided tour to the brewery and end with a Beer Tasting session. There are a total of 5 specialties with Monstein, with some seasonal ones subject to availability. Otherwise, you can also find these lovely Beers in most restaurants in Davos Klosters. We were told that the success of Monstein Beer lies in the natural Swiss Alpine Water.

Cold Cuts Platter (with various Dried Meat and Smoked Meat/ Venison/ Beef/ Cheese)- CHF 29.50

Alpine Mushroom Soup (CHF 7.60/ small)

Monstein Rosti (CHF 22/ small)

Home-made Blueberry Pie (CHF 6.50/ with cream)

For an authentic local swiss cuisine, make your way to Restaurant Veltlinerstubli, a restaurant housed in a 300 year old rustic wooden house (since 1717). The restaurant sits on a slope and offers breath-taking Alpine views along the way. It is also within walking distance from the Monstein Brewery. The Chef is a local Swiss and has been living there since young; all the ingredients are locally sourced, fresh from the local producers. It feels like home stepping in the restaurant, with warm and homey atmosphere. The lady owner of the place speaks fluent English so if you would like to find out more about the local Swiss food or the neighborhood, she is more than happy to share with you.

It's always wise to start with the Cold Cuts Platter... which features many region-specific Cheeses and Dried Meat or Bundnerfleisch from the Graubunden (Switzerland) region. Though some may be found out of Graubunden area, most are uniquely to the region and if you are a serious foodie, you should not miss this out. No trip to Switzerland is complete without having Rosti, a famous Swiss dish made of Potatoes. Veltlinerstubli's rendition is to have it served with Veal... the Rosti has a crisp outer layer with soft inner texture, while the Veal is cooked in brown sauce. End the meal with its home-made Blueberry Pie. The Chef only uses in-season ingredients and only the freshest Blueberries from the Monstein mountain fit for this Pie. The Blueberries carry the natural sweetness and gives the Pie the necessary flavors with little need of additional Sugar. It is so soft that it can fall apart at the nudge of a fork.

P/S: the Blueberry Pie was so delicious that we were crying for more, it was the best Blueberry Pie I've ever had (not one of those, the only one).

Have Fun Exploring Davos!
