*** Cheang Kee has since relocated to Tanjung Bungah***
With a standard cafe facade and industrial red brick design, one would assume Cheang Kee 蒋记 offers a Western menu but on the contrary, it has a local Chinese menu. The interior decor has got nothing to do with its offerings; during this soft launch period, Cheang Kee only offers 2 types of food- Fish Head/Meat Noodles or Penang Hokkien Prawn Noodles (or Steamboat by reservation only). Despite of its slight high price, the taste is legit and you get to enjoy the food in a cozy dining atmosphere. The menu's a little limited for now, worth a look if they could offer more in the future.
Fish Fillet Noodles (Rm 15.90)
Penang Hokkien Prawn Mee (Rm 8.80/ additional Rm 3.50 for Mantis Prawns/ additional Rm 2 for Pork Meat Balls)
Chicken Teriyaki (Rm 10.90 for 3 skewers)
The Penang Hokkien Prawn Mee was delicious, a pretty standard Hokkien Mee that had all the boxes ticked; the broth was multi-dimensional with a hint of seafood sweetness. Diners have the option to opt for add ons. For us, we had the Pork Meat Balls and Deep Fried Mantis Prawns... with the latter one being a slight disappointment. We could barely taste the Mantis Prawns... the batter was too thick to our liking. Likewise, the Fish Fillet Noodles was up to par either. The broth was amazing... creamy with a burst of flavors from the sea. The addition of Pork Lards added a familiar yet comforting touch to the noodles. On top of the noodle dishes, we also had a side order of Chicken Teriyaki. The skewers were buttered and grilled to perfection... served with Japanese Sesame Sauce and Ebiko. The buttery fragrance was bolder but not as sweet as compared to the Japanese's. Pretty addictive to go with a pint of chilled Beer.
