Hanmalu Korean Restaurant @ Vantage Desiran Tanjung, Tanjung Tokong, Penang.

While it's wise to visit those established big players in town when it comes to Korean food, it does not mean you should give up on those relatively quieter new comers. Hanmalu Korean Restaurant at Vantage Desiran Tanjung (level 1) is one good example... opened for less than a month and manned by a Korean couple, this is the place to come for home-style Korean cooking at its best. It does not have flashy signage, overly designed interior decor or a big menu to impress but a list of comprises of commonly seen and unusual Korean delicacies. The classics are available with a selection of meats done in various ways (hot pot, grills, fried or soup)... reasonably priced with sizable serving portion (and good quality).

Rabokki (Rm 25)

Pork Ribs Soup (Rm 58)

Korean Fried Chicken- Original and Spicy Sauce (Rm 50 for both plates)

Nakjibokkeum/ Stir Fried Octopus with Korean Spicy Sauce (Rm 38)

Bibim Naengmyeon/ Cold Noodles (Rm 23)

Sharing is recommend at Hanmalu due to the huge serving portion. The 6 of us had 5 dishes and all of them were very delicious. We started off with Pork Ribs Soup... a concoction made of Pork broth, Korean spicy Fermented Bean paste, Pork Ribs and various greens. It was served to us piping hot and the flavors were amazing. Stir Fried Octopus with Korean Spicy Sauce was equally delicious... a spicy concoction of Octopus, Onions and Chilies... served with silky smooth Vermicelli Noodles. We were new to this dish but the flavors were familiar. It was somewhat similar to Korean-styled barbecued meat... probably the same Gochujang sauce.

The star dish of the day was the Fried Chicken... available in both original flavor and Spicy sauce. Both were good in its own way but the original stood out. The outer layer was crisp and addictive while the inner meat was reasonably seasoned with plump, tender meat. The rest were alright but certainly did not disappoint.
