Look Yuen (乐园) Chinese Restaurant @ Bukit Mertajam, Penang.

Located at the border of Bukit Mertajam and Butterworth, Look Yuen (乐园) has been the communal dining space for the nearby folks; not only that the long-established Chinese restaurant offers a big menu but most of their items are reasonably priced either. It does not have a proper menu but the servers are knowledgeable enough to advise on the choices. Parking is not an issue here but the heat-intolerant might be disappointed with the absence of air-conditioners... not the place for special occasion but if you are up for a casual family meal, this is one of the decent choices around. 

Stir Fried Chicken with Ginger and Spring Onions 炒姜葱鸡肉 (Rm 12.50)

Steamed Fish Balls and Glass Noodles 清蒸粉丝鱼丸 (Rm 8)

Salted Egg Yolk Squid 咸蛋苏东 (Rm 13.50)

Stir Fried Qing Long Vegetables with Sprouts 炒豆芽青龙菜 (Rm 11.50)

Char Hor Fun 滑蛋鸳鸯 (Rm 5.80/ small)

Salted Egg Yolk Squid was the only dish that left us with the deepest impression, not that the Squid was huge in size but the Salted Egg Yolk element was bold. The greasy aroma swims on the palate even after a while; the exterior was crisp and the sandy Salted Egg Yolk carried a hint of sweetness. It was a dangerously addictive dish. Also worth-mentioning was Steamed Fish Balls and Glass Noodles, a rather unique dish with Steamed Fish Balls served with Glass Noodles. The Glass Noodles barely registered any flavor but the Fish Balls were as bouncy as we would have hoped... best to be enjoyed with some chopped Chilies. Other dishes were of standard-average.
