Izakaya By Sango @ Noordin Road, Georgetown, Penang.

Set in a bar setting, Izakaya By Sango is the latest addition to Penang's Japanese dining scene. The barely signposted spot is hard to notice and does not suggest Japanese hospitality. But as the name suggests, the place runs as an "Izakaya"... a casual Japanese Pub, the variety of liquor is a thing, the place offers worth-looking modern Japanese menu. We could tell that the place serves good Donburi as the variety suggests but there are also some Japanese delights uncommonly found in classic Japanese spots. The setting is suitable for a drink over some Japas "Japanese Tapas" or a quick Japanese meal in lieu of proper family dining; do not expect things to be lowly priced here but not to the extent that it will break the bank.

Unagi Tamago Donburi (Rm 45)

Hiyamugi Pasta (Rm 18)

Ikura & Foie Gras Chawanmushi (Rm 18)

We were definitely pleased to see the aesthetically presented Hiyamugi Pasta... cold Noodles served with Ebiko, thinly sliced Beetroot, Deep Fried Garlic flakes and Sesame dip. Though simple, it was most refreshing; as though we were having Salad... the Sesame dip was nicely done... not too creamy nor heavy to go with the Noodles. Equally good was Unagi Tamago Donburi... grilled Unagi served on Japanese Rice with Onsen Tamago. It does meet our expectation (but not mind-blowing) but for that portion (with Miso Soup), we thought it was overpriced. We have had the exact thing at some other Japanese restaurant (in Penang) for slightly lower rate.
