Everyone loves a hot, warming bowl of Porridge, though traditionally eaten for breakfast, it makes a great light lunch or popular night snack. For a good old-fashioned bowl of Cantonese-styled Porridge, make your way to Yee Sung Kai Chok, one of the oldest Porridge specialists in Penang... since time immemorial. It used to be selling at the coffee shop right across the current place (a stall housed in the coffee shop) but has since moved into their own place, occupying the entire coffee shop. They have also revised the opening hours, expanding from dinner time to now lunch and dinner. Though the slight adjustment to the prices, this spot at Cintra Street still serves some of the best Porridges (and blanched Chicken) in town.
Blanched Chicken Drumstick (Rm 7.50)
Fresh Fish Slices (Rm 15)
Chicken Porridge (Rm 6.50)
Fish Porridge (Rm 8)
The piping hot Porridge has the perfect consistency... not too thick nor watery, but with the perfect starchy outlook... a sure sign that it has been cooked with adequate time and skills. The Porridge was reasonably seasoned and served with condiments like Fish, Chicken, Lettuce, pickled Radish, Spring Onions and Ginger. We recommend eating the Porridge with the Fried Crullers (Yau Cha Guai).
If you would prefer a meatier bite, go for their Fresh Fish Slices, to be dipped in the piping hot Porridge... the result is a semi-cooked, soft but delicious Fish. One shall not miss their Blanched Chicken Drumstick... one of the best in town according to some. We had ours with the Porridge... the Chicken was most tender and succulent, perfectly served over the luscious Soy sauce and Sesame Oil... topped with a generous amount of Ginger and Spring Onions. It was most delicious to enjoy with their home-made Chili dip.
