Hoshino Coffee (星乃咖啡店) @ Queensbay Mall, Penang.

Hailed from Japan, Hoshino Coffee has taken the town by storm since its opening a few weeks ago. The well-established Japanese brand has presence over Singapore, South Korea, China and Malaysia... with the newly opened branch at Queensbay Mall being the first branch in Penang. Apart from its highly acclaimed Japanese Coffee, the restaurant serves a variety of Japanese-Western food like Pasta, Paella, Omu Rice, French Toasts and Souffles. The overwhelming responses discouraged many from patronizing the shop, we must admit that it did take us 3 visits (absurdly long queue) before we could even enter the restaurant. Decent food with generous serving and wallet-friendly prices; we are not surprised with the constant influx of patrons keep returning for the food.

French Toast (Rm 17.70)

Single Souffle Pancake (Rm 14.80)

Hoshino's Mentaiko Carbonara seems to be a popular choice but we had Teriyaki Spaghetti and Hoshino Spaghetti instead. The former one had an indelible sweetness but also armed with an alluring smoky-sweet aroma; the latter choice possessed a bold buttery-element, the concoction of Soft Boiled Egg, Chicken Sausage, Chicken Bacon and Greens worked but in our opinion, the Butter-factor was a little too overwhelming and a tad too greasy to our liking.

For those with a sweet tooth, the French Toast can be a good replacement to the classic Spaghetti. The Toasts were fluffy-soft and equipped with an irresistible eggy fragrance, coupled with Maple Syrup, the combination was delicious. Equally delicious is the Souffle Pancake, which tastes like less-sweeter version of Madeline but you can always top it up with Maple Syrup and fresh Cream for a richer, sweeter dimension.

  1. Not crazy about the celebrated Indonesian or Vietnamese coffee, yet to give this Japanese one a go.

  2. First I've heard of this spot. I wonder if there's one in KL?

  3. Crazy queue was formed when its early opening period at Mid Valley. Hopefully the crowd is lesser now so I can pay it a visit as there are a few dishes that attract me.
