Azlan Tom Yum @ Balik Pulau, Penang.

Serving the neighborhood for more than a decade (16 years to be exact), Azlan Tom Yum is like the de-facto communal dining place at Balik Pulau. The folks at the serene town just know where to find the best local eats, the place gets crowded as early as 7 am in the morning. Amongst the breakfast selection, the Roti Canai is one of the best-sellers while other options include Thosai, Nasi Lemak and Lontong. As the day reaches 10 am, the kitchen dishes out the curry dishes and a variety of rice dishes; the ala-carte menu will also be available by then; in the evenings, the place offers Malay-styled Thai food. The variety, the flavors and the cleanliness are some of the reasons that make Azlan Tom Yum a popular spot... amongst the locals and cyclists.

Many Thanks to Azlan Tom Yum for hosting us.

Curry Stingray (Rm 6/ piece)

Siakap served with Garlic, Ginger and Soy Sauce (Rm 30)

Prawn (Rm 5/ piece)

Ulam (Rm 4)

Though you can always handpick the curries at the display counter, it is recommended you order separately (ala-carte menu) if you are dining in a group. Start with a plate of fresh, crunchy Ulam... complete with Azlan's home-made Sambal Belacan... not fiery hot but spicy and flavorful enough to whet up your appetite.

Azlan's Curry Stingray left us with a very deep impression. Unlike the much sought-after thick version, the Curry Stingray may seem watery but the flavors are not weak. The real draw is the silky smooth texture, little effort is required to slit the fish; a great dish to spoon over Rice. Feel like having more fish? Go for their Siakap served with Garlic, Ginger and Soy Sauce- deep fried Siakap topped with Garlic, Ginger and Soy Sauce with a dash of refreshing Lime Juice... crisp texture with powerful flavors; just as you thought it might be a little heavy on the palate, the acidity from the Lime cuts through the greasiness and opens up a refreshing dimension. Equally worth-savory dishes are the grilled Cat Fish and stir-fried Prawns.

  1. I would love those grilled ikan keli. Like the look of everything there is - I do wish they would keep everything in a cabinet with see-through sliding doors though, like what most of them do here.
