AWA Mee Bar (阿瓦面吧) @ Gurney Plaza, Penang.

One of the latest addition to Gurney Plaza- AWA Mee Bar is not new to the food and beverage scene, it has presence across the nation but first in Penang. Like the name suggests, the place specializes in offering noodles but the presentation is a little odd (or new). Diners get to choose the type of noodles they want (and how they like them to be served- dry or soup) followed by the soup bases. On the menu, it says all the soup bases are boiled for at least 4 hours to accentuate the flavors. There are quite a few combinations to choose from but the prices vary and could range from Rm 16.90 to Rm 22.90. AWA Mee Bar can be found at Level 2, exactly upstairs of Mr. Dakgalbi (near Sushi Tei).

Superior 18 Seafood Dry & Spicy Noodles 海鲜18捞-辣 (Rm 22.90)

Stewed Fish and Pickled Mustard Green Soup with Rice Noodles 瓦姨酸菜鱼米线 (Rm 19.90)

Watodo Bean Stuffs in Claypot 瓦都嘟 (Rm 13.90)

All soups are being served using claypots. Both the broth for Superior 18 Seafood and Stewed Fish and Pickled Mustard Green Soup were great, but they certainly did not taste like something that have been boiled for hours... as though they were ordinary soup. The condiments found inside the pot were alright, nothing special nor unexpected. The Spicy Noodles served together with the Superior 18 Seafood were a let down. The noodles were overly seasoned and the entire dish was a tad too salty to our liking.

Equally disappointing was the Watodo Bean Stuffs in Claypot, a pot full of Bean Curd Sheets and Bean Curd... dressed in light Soy sauce. Though some of them were crisp, most of them were too hard to the bite. The whole dish was drenched in oil, it was too greasy to eat on its own.

  2. I think it is a trend these days for noodle houses to let us pick the type of noodles, and then the soup and then some even allows us to pick the type of meat for our noodles whether to include spare parts or not and so on. I'll usually be the one placing the orders for places like this because William said he look at the order sheet oso he pening kao kao dy.
