Tea Hall (堂茶茶艺馆) @ Abu Siti Lane, Georgetown, Penang.

The facade might not look promising but behind the door is a Chinese restaurant serving home-styled dishes and an array of premium Chinese Tea. Tea Hall (堂茶茶艺馆) is a time-honored restaurant that has been around for years... most of its businesses are by referral, the place sees constant gathering by a group of Chinese Tea-aficionados. Though it seems to be operating as a tea house, the menu is surprisingly extensive but all items are competitively priced. The air-conditioned restaurant is suitable for family gathering or a casual meal, it is popular amongst the white collar workers in the vicinity.

Thickened Mee Sua Soup (Rm 8.80)

Sze Chuan Dan Dan Noodles (Rm 8.80)

Yong To Fu (Rm 13.80)

Steamed Prawn Dumplings (Rm 6.80 for 3)

Herbal Jelly (Rm 4.50)

The thickened Mee Sua Soup (otherwise known as Mee Sua Koh) was simple, straight-forward but beautifully cooked. The broth was tasty with great consistency and a discernible meat-flavor. They seem to be very generous with minced Pork as well but we would prefer the dish to come with a touch of Seafood... for the extra dimension. The Sze Chuan Dan Dan Noodles reminded us of Tom Yum but with a creative twist. The broth with a red hue certainly tasted like Tom Yum but with a powerful after-kick... Sze Chuan Peppercorn was added. As a result of that, we felt a familiar numbness on the tongue, but the broth was appetizing and strangely addictive. Other notable dishes include their Dim Sum dishes, Yong To Fu and chilled Gui Ling Gao.

Jasmine Tea (Rm 9.90/ 12 grams)

  1. I like to be surprised by food when the appearance of a restaurant might not look so great.

  2. Mee sua looks like it's all in tiny bits. Dumplings look very good but are kinda pricey, it seems.
