Great Delight Kitchen (悦为食) @ Phuah Hin Leong, Georgetown, Penang.

Private Kitchen is gaining its popularity in Penang, especially when you want to cut the mainstream restaurants or over-rated franchised brands out there and proceed straight to the basic, traditional flavors; or merely satisfy the particular urge to have some classic home-cooked dishes. While Great Delight Kitchen (悦为食) may operate like an ordinary restaurant, it actually runs on a business model like Private Kitchen. Customization of menu can be arranged with prior notice- simply inform the proprietor on the budget and they are able to customize the menu accordingly. The server proudly shared with us that the existing Teo Chew-influenced menu only covers 5% of what the restaurant could actually offer; as long as you can name it, they can cook it. Tables are limited and with its strong customer base, it is highly recommended that you make advance booking before visiting the place (we visited 3 times without booking and were turned down). The damage for this meal was slightly over RM 100 (for 3 pax), not exactly a cheap meal but we were pleased with the quality.

Stir Fried Squid with Chinese Chives 韭菜花炒鲜鱿花 (Rm 20/ small)

Braised Chicken with Fermented Bean Curd 南乳芋头鸡 (Rm 20/ small)

Cantonese styled Stir Fried Egg with Crab Meat 桂花蟹肉炒蛋 (Rm 18/ small)

Stir Fried Deep Fried Bitter Gourd with Salted Egg Yolk 咸蛋苦瓜酥 (Rm 16/ small)

Traditional Braised Glass Noodles 酱香干焖冬粉 (Rm 18/ large)

Braised Chicken with Fermented Bean Curd is a proud signature dish of Great Delight Kitchen; instead of Duck, Chicken is used for a more tender bite to suit its target customers (seniors and children). But the flavors were well-balanced. The Chicken was expertly cooked to the right doneness; with condiments like Yam and Black Fungus, it was a dish best spooned over Rice. Equally savory was the Stir Fried Egg with Crab Meat- the introduction of Crab Meat added a sleek sweet seafood touch to the Egg and its delightful smoky hue was the real alluring factor of this dish. While Stir Fried Squid with Chinese Chives and Stir Fried Deep Fried Bitter Gourd with Salted Egg Yolk did not disappoint, we were not blown away by the quality. They were of standard-average.

If your diet does not make room for Rice, go for their traditional Braised Glass Noodles. The portion was hearty and contained an enticing Pork Lard fragrance; seasoning was spot on and the Glass Noodles were carefully cooked to the right texture (not slouchy nor under-cooked).
