Mekong Vietnamese Restaurant @ Pulau Tikus, Penang.

Penangites have professed their love for Vietnamese food and there's an increase in new Vietnamese restaurants to keep up with the burgeoning demand. Mekong Vietnamese Restaurant is one of the few newly opened Vietnamese joints in Penang. Unlike most Vietnamese restaurants, Mekong takes on a more sophisticated approach. The restaurant has a proper setting sans the Vietnamese frills, it did not create a very "Vietnamese" atmosphere but the Vietnamese-focused menu proven otherwise (we believe the restaurant is manned by Vietnamese). It has all the signature Vietnamese dishes that any Malaysian can possibly name; price points are however, higher than expected. Also, the restaurant is still new and do expect some delays with the food orders.

Vietnamese Spring Rolls (Rm 15.90)

Vietnamese Crispy Pancake (Rm 13.90)

Vermicelli Noodles with Lemongrass Beef (Rm 15.90)

We dropped the usual Beef Pho and proceeded with the Vermicelli Noodles with grilled Lemongrass Beef and we were glad that we did so. The Beef was expertly marinated and meticulously grilled; it was well-seasoned with a touch of Black Pepper. With the pickled Radish/ Carrot and the crunchy greens, the dish was most appetizing and delicious. It would be even better if the dish can be less-oily.

While the Spring Rolls were standard-average, the Vietnamese Pancake was a disappointment. It was extremely greasy, we even found the bottom of the Pancake was swimming in oil. The edges were crispy but the overall taste did not shine. We've had better ones at other Vietnamese restaurants (in Penang).
