Nyonya Willow @ Taman Tunas Damai, Bayan Lepas, Penang.

Update: Nyonya Willow has relocated to Arena Curve (72-1-3), opposite to Arang Cafe

Nyonya Willow is definitely one of the most secretive cafes/ restaurants, not only that it does not have any signage, it is nestled in a terrace house... within the secluded neighborhood of Taman Tunas Damai (Bayan Lepas). As the name might have hinted, Nyonya Willow runs like a private kitchen, in a residential. The menu changes regularly- depending on what they could source for the day, the dishes vary. It offers some Nyonya delights as well as some favorite Malaysian delicacy such as Nasi Lemak. All ingredients are prepared in house. The setting is homey as well and might not be too accommodating for larger groups. Prices are however, veering towards the higher side but given the fact that they cook in a small scale and every dish is home-cooked, the price is justifiable. Taman Tunas Damai is near to the newly operated SMK Heng Ee Bayan Lepas branch or where Honda Car Service center is located.

Nasi Ulam (Rm 10)

Joo Hoo Char (Rm 12/ small)

Perut Ikan (Rm 16/ small)

Chicken Kapitan (Rm 16/ small)

Gulai Tumis with Stingray (Rm 10/ 2 pieces)

The serving portion at Nyonya Willow is generally smaller so do order proportionately according to the number of guests. We had Nasi Ulam in lieu of the usual white rice, the fragrance was there and the herbs were cleverly used but it lacked a touch of salt. Perhaps more Dried Shrimp or a tablespoon of Sambal Belacan will make the miracle. Joo Hoo Char and Perut Ikan were nothing out of the ordinary; the former dish was a tad too sweet to our liking, the aroma of the Dried Shrimp did not shine either, the Perut Ikan was equally sweet and we thought it lacked of some form of fragrance that my untrained taste buds could not discerned.

We enjoyed the Chicken Kapitan and the Gulai Tumis, though the curries were veering towards the sweeter side, the flavors were bold. The Gulai Tumis even possessed a tinge of acidity that cuts through the creamy dimension. It would be even better if the Stingray could be cut into bigger pieces.
