Kesum Art Restaurant @ Stewart Lane, Georgetown, Penang.

An art gallery and a restaurant, Kesum Art Restaurant is one of the perfect spots for visual art lovers. The newly opened restaurant at Stewart Lane offers a menu featuring Southern Malaysian favorites; diners can have a simple tour at the art gallery on first floor and move on to lunch at the restaurant one floor lower. The restaurant is simple with only 5 tables available; not only seats are limited but they have limited quantity for their offering too (only 30 sets available daily). Exceptional food quality but sluggish service, it took them more than 40 minutes to serve our orders. The heat-intolerant be forewarned- while the place is fully air-conditioned, the temperature is usually kept at room temperature (approx. 28'C). But if you have great interest in both arts and Southern Malaysian cuisine, this is the place to go... without breaking your budget. Kesum Art Restaurant occupies a corner unit at Stewart Lane, right next to Chulia Lane.

Gado-Gado (Set Order/ Rm 19.80)

Laksa Johor

Pengat

It's advisable to order their 3-course Set which comes with a serving of appetizer, main and a dessert (from Rm 19.80 nett). We sampled their Gado-Gado, Laksa Johor and Pengat. The appetizer Gado-Gado, a type of Indonesian salad served with warm sweet Peanut sauce. It was pretty straight-forward and the condiments were pretty standard-average. The highlight of the Set was Laksa Johor; it uses Spaghetti instead of the usual Laksa noodles. The fish broth was robust in flavors, we could even taste the fiber of the spices and that attested the freshness of the herbs as well as their sincerity. Portion was hearty and best enjoyed with a general helping of their sweat-inducing Sambal. We ended the meal with Pengat- Banana cooked in sweetened Coconut Milk. It was alright but probably they used the wrong type of Banana, the dessert was peculiarly acidic. Not a big fan of this.
