Din Tai Fung Restaurant (鼎泰豐) @ Gurney Plaza, Penang.

Big announcement was made a couple months back and it stirred up the excitement of Xiao Long Bao devotees. The newly opened branch on Lower Ground floor of Gurney Plaza (right next to the food court on the same floor) is the first outpost of the Taiwanese-based Dumpling expert. The name itself- Din Tai Fung needs no further introduction; the big draw of the brand is of course, Shanghainese Soup Dumplings or widely known as Xiao Long Bao but they are not a one-trick pony. The big menu features a vast selection of Chinese eats... from Chinese hand-pulled Noodles to the well-received Fried Rice or comfortable timeless Chinese sweet treats. We like the interior decor- well-partitioned with wooden elements exuding a calm and zen vibe. Adequate distance and space are allocated for each table and comfort is assured. Service is expert and attentive, not too bad for first operation day (though we were not wow-ed by the food).

Truffle Xiao Long Bao (Rm 9.10 each)

Signature Xiao Long Bao (Rm 7 for 3 pieces)

We dropped by for supper and we could not stuff ourselves with more items so had a few just to sample. Their Signature Xiao Long Bao is probably the most-ordered item of the day. Complement must be given for offering such a flexibility, one may opt to have 3 pieces in lieu of the usual 6 or 12 so even lone-ranger can savor the dumplings without the concern of overeating. The delicate pleated Soup Dumplings come with pork filling and a splash of sweet, meaty broth. It was served to us hot... but not as piping hot as we would have hoped. The broth was meticulously seasoned and the filling was toothsome but the dumpling skin was a tad too thick to our liking. The texture somewhat was inappropriate and spoiled the overall performance.

Truffle Xiao Long Bao on the other hand, had a soft hint of earthy Mushroomy flavor imbued but the dumpling skin was a disappointment. Probably first day jitters but there some areas that they should really look into.
