Ah Wang Cafe (Tea-Time Toast) @ Tanjung Tokong, Penang.

Hidden in one of the corners of Tanjung Tokong (from Prima Tanjung, drive straight up to Tanjung Tokong route, drive pass Tesco Sri Tanjung, and look for the first traffic light which you are about to turn right into Jalan Tokong Thai Pak Kong, it should be surrounded by some low-cost flat), Ah Wang Cafe is rather a hidden gem in Tanjung Tokong, it is a small cafeteria that serves home-made kaya(Coconut Jam)-butter toast and Hainanese coffee to satisfy your taste buds. The place is well-known by the residents nearby, and even some kaya-enthusiasts. The business hour of this cafe can be quite problematic, as it opens from 1.30pm until 6pm only, and closed on every Sunday, so tea time (ideally at 2-3pm) can just be the perfect time to savor this heavenly delicious kaya-butter toast with the uniquely brewed Hainanese Coffee. Price-wise, I'd considered that to be very economical, there were three of us and the total damage was just Rm12.30. Our orders were as follow:

Canned kaya (Coconut Jam) are available and for sale too, but do make your reservation first or try to be there as early as you can as it has high tendency of running out of stock. I'd considered myself very lucky for being able to get myself three cans of kaya. The kaya was being cooked in a traditional way (only the brown version available, you can't find the pandan/green version here) and possessed a very aromatic and lumpy texture. You definitely do not want a watery kaya do you ? Small cans of kaya are being priced at Rm3.50 each and the bigger cans are Rm4.50 each.

There are three types of kaya-butter toast available, as in three types of bread, this was using the Roti Benggali (Indian Bread), it has a good reputation on complementing well with coffee. It has a very crispy nature as well, making it very suitable to be used as toast. Anyway, the toast was spread with a balance amount of kaya (coconut jam) and butter (you can always request for more according to your taste). A traditional way of savoring this delectable toast is to dip the toast into the freshly brewed coffee of theirs. This version of toast suits those who prefer crispy and crunchy texture (of bread/toast) perfectly.

This is definitely my choice over the other two types of bread, the toast was made using the fluffy butter bread, which we used to have it together with Ice Cream (Ice Cream Sandwich). Anyway, this kind of bread has a stronger buttery flavor compared to the other types, which butter lovers shall not miss. The overall texture was more to the soft, moist and fluffy type instead of crispy and crunchy.

The third type of toast being the ordinary type of toast (our all time favorite), with the using of the normal white bread, the toast has both crispy and soft texture. However, it looks too ordinary to me instead, I would definitely opt for two other types of toast, Roti Benggali and the Butter Bread instead.

Although it was a tea-break for us, but I can always spare some spaces in my tummy when it comes to a cup of decent half-boiled egg, and the egg was perfectly cooked (not too raw but not well-done) too.

I was introduced to a special drink of theirs, this Lime Barley drink, it has some similar flavor to 7-Up and Sprite, with a hint of sourness, but strangely, the drink works well, although it was a bit sweet to me, but it was very refreshing and rejuvenating instead.
