Bibimbowl @ Summerton, Bayan Baru, Penang.

A proper Korean meal is never cheap but with the addition of Bibimbowl, Penangites can now enjoy delicious Korean quick fix at affordable price tags. As the name suggests, Bibimbowl is a space dedicated to serve the Korean mixed-rice; it is a simple, casual space that offers quick service. Apart from the signature Bibimbap, diners can find some Korean delicacies such as Cupbowl (mixture of Rice, meat and Korean Glass Noodles), Tteokbokki, Mandu etc. Prices are generally cheaper than most established Korean eateries so if you are craving for Korean food and in short of time, give this place a go.

Tteokbokki/ Korean Rice Cake (Rm 15)

Bibimbowl's signature Bibimbap series does not disappoint. We had their Chicken Bibimbowl... served with a bowl of complimentary Soup and Banchan. The concoction of Rice with various condiments mixed with Gochujang sauce was delicious. The flavor was spot on and the crunchy elements strengthen the texture and dimension. On the Chicken, the meat was beautifully marinated with a hint of sweetness and smoky touches.

It was our first time having Pork Cupbap, a concoction consists of Rice, Korean Glass Noodles, greens, grilled Meat and Mandu (Korean dumplings)... dressed with Mayonnaise and Mustard sauce. The concoction was refreshing and the seasoning was minimal; the overall combination was lighter than Bibimbap and probably less tiring on the palate.... more appropriate for weight-watchers we reckon. The Tteokbokki on the other hand, was disappointingly average, the sauce was overly rich and sweet to our liking. The absence of Hard Boiled Egg left us underwhelmed either. Not exactly the item that we'd recommend.

  1. The ingredients seem to stand out more on that black plate.
