Flavor Food Hot Pot (原石锅) @ Burmah Road, Pulau Tikus, Penang.

If you think Hot Pot would be heaty, greasy and full with Monosodium-Glutamate (MSG), you need to pay a visit to Flavor Food. The modest and rather invisible Hot Pot restaurant is a new addition to Pulau Tikus, well-tucked in one of the shop houses on the bustling Burmah Road (right next to Union Primary School). Flavor Food believes in extracting the natural wholesomeness of the ingredients and bold seasonings will not be seen here. Most ingredients are home-made and they are not a big supporter over processed food either. The fully air-conditioned restaurant has a chic but cozy atmosphere, most suitable for family occasion or casual dining. The observant would notice their sleek stone pot, specially designed to suit the theme. A Hot Pot restaurant with heavy Cantonese-roots it seems; but as far as quality and service are concerned, I'd definitely love to revisit.

Disclaimer: We visited the restaurant on our own with the intention to pay, the owner spotted us and insisted to pick up the tab. Comments for this review are however, genuine (no ratings shall be given though).

Set C- Coconut Chicken Steamboat/ 椰子鸡火锅 with Lap Mei Rice (Rm 75)

Lap Mei Rice/ 腊味饭

Flavor Food boasts over their signature Coconut Chicken Hot Pot-  a delicious concoction that uses Free Range Chicken, fresh Coconut Juice, Chicken broth, Water Chestnut and Bamboo Fungus. All orders are cooked on the spot and a minimum 10-20 minute wait is required. The broth was in its unadulterated best, one could easily discern the natural sweetness of the Coconut Juice as well as the fragrance of the Chicken. The seasoning was weak but the idea was to fully accentuate the flavors of the ingredients. One of the best ways to enjoy the Chicken is to dip with their home-made Dark Soy Sauce-Galangal-Lime sauce. Once you are done with the Chicken, throw in the additional orders (from the ala-carte menu) and enjoy. We'd recommend their home-made Meat (Pork) Balls and Prawn Dumplings.

Together with the Set- Lap Mei Fan sees some beautiful-glittering waxed meat bountifully laid over steamed rice and served with premium Soy sauce... Spring Onions and Coriander to taste. Flavor Food knows their waxed meat well, they were expertly steamed to the melt-in-the-mouth texture sans the unpleasant waxy smell. It was a good tummy-filler and to sum up the meal.
