Assam Laksa/ Cendol @ Paya Terubong, Penang.

One of the popular places for the local residents to get their afternoon snack will be this unassuming stall along Jalan Paya Terubong, opposite to Shell Petrol Station. Albeit this is more towards a "take-away" place but they do provide a few chairs and tables for those who wish to dine-in. There are two stalls nestled under the wooden shelter- one selling Assam Laksa, the other one dishes out Cendol and Ice Kacang. While prices are slightly cheaper than those in coffee houses or hawker centers, we did not think they were entirely great. I would not make a trip up here solely for the Assam Laksa or Cendol but if you are in dire need for something to quench your thirst, you may consider to stop by and enjoy a bowl of their Cendol/ Ice Kacang. To find the place, locate Shell Petrol Station along Jalan Paya Terubong, a stone's throw distance away from Econsave. This place is directly opposite to the Shell Petrol station.

The Assam Laksa (Rm 3 for small) did not manage to wow us. It was disappointingly average. We thought the flavors of the broth were somewhat subdued. It lacked of the sweet, sour and spicy notes or they were simply too mild in my favor. The noodles on the other hand, were not as bouncy as expected.

We were quite taken back by the artificial color of the Cendol Jelly (Rm 2) but it managed to change my mind after a sip on the cooling dessert. The savory-sweet notes underneath the Cendol were perfectly balanced. I don't like my Cendol sweet and the Cendol here passed the test. Artificial coloring aside, this is actually a pretty decent yet inexpensive thirst-quencher.

Put an end to the scorching hot weather with a bowl of icy cold Ice Kacang (Rm 2.20). It has the standard ingredients but with another personal touch- Canned Pineapples. The sweeten tropical fruit gives another layer of dimension to the dessert but I thought it was still too sweet to my liking nevertheless. Don't get me wrong, I am perfectly good with the Ice Kacang, especially with a well-discounted price.
