Black Canyon @ Gurney Plaza, Penang.

Located at the al-fresco dining area of Gurney Plaza (facing Chilies, G Hotel), Black Canyon has been in business for quite some time, I wouldn't even notice the place if it wasn't a random walk to that area. Black Canyon is rather quiet during lunch time on weekdays (not too sure about weekends though) which makes me wonder why since they do have an extensive menu and prices are wallet-friendly. It could be due to below-par quality but no, the dishes we had were above average. Maybe they should be more aggressive in marketing? Black Canyon serves Thai food mainly but it appears that they do have an extensive range of Coffee to offer either but they could be more genuine in providing attentive service (only one waiter was serving the customers during my visit). There is also an al-freso section right in front of the restaurant for those who prefer a more outdoorsy ambiance.

Do not look down on this Thai Rice Noodles/ Kha-Nam Jean and Prawns in Spicy Prawn Tom Yum (Rm 11.90). It may seem bland but the broth was robust in flavors, a balanced medley of sour and sweet, with a hint of sweetness from the coconut milk. Well, I do like my Tom Yum to be sour and spicy, yes, very sour and very spicy. Three fresh, succulent and plump prawns were found in the soup, together with some tomatoes, enoki mushrooms, baby corns etc. It definitely whets my appetite; Tom Yum lovers will find it hard to stop at a sip.

Possessed sufficient "Wok Hei", their Stir Fried Spaghetti with Seafood and Hot Basil (Rm 11.90) was aesthetically pleasing, extra marks given for the al-dente Spaghetti. The dish comes with some resilient Squid, succulent Prawns, mushrooms, Long Beans, as well as some baby corns. The permeating aroma of Basil adds another dimension to the dish, with a hint of spiciness from the Chilies and sweetness from the Soy sauce. Its unique savory flavor struck my palate, every bit of it was a joy to eat.

I am an ardent fan of Tab Tim Krob/ Water Chestnut in Coconut Milk (Rm 4.90) when it comes to Thai food. I had no qualms in finishing this dessert alone, however, a slipshod in preparation was the lack of Jack fruit as though the "omph" was missing. The crunchy yet juicy Water Chestnut makes a perfect combination with the creamy and velvety smooth Coconut Milk. The dessert possessed the perfect sweetness to my liking, not too cloying (we did state that we would prefer less-sweeten version upon ordering); albeit not mind blowing, it was a pleasingly refreshing dessert to end our meal.
