Lao Chu Heritage 老厝砂锅潮州粥 @ Bukit Mertajam, Penang.

Located within walking distance from Icon City in Bukit Mertajam, Lao Chu Heritage 老厝砂锅潮州粥 offers a comforting Chinese menu with plenty of Teochew highlights and is especially known for its seafood porridge served in claypot style. Prices are reasonable, making it a popular choice for casual family meals in the area. On my visits, I also enjoy ordering their Teochew Mee Tiao, which delivers familiar, no-frills flavours and works well as an alternative if you’re not in the mood for porridge.

Lao Chu's signature Seafood Porridge can be very flexible- from Prawns, Clams, Crabs to Octopus, as long as the Seafood is available- you can mix and match the seafood combo in any way you like. We had ours simple and straight forward- with Prawns and Fish Maw. The serving portion was good for 2 pax and we enjoyed the bold seafood sweetness from the Porridge. There were bits of Dried Scallops and Dong Cai (Tianjin Preserved Vegetables) too. The Deep Fried Salted Bean Curd was something unusual- nothing wrong about the Bean Curd but the accompanying dip was merely Salted Hot Water with plenty of julienned Spring Onions, Coriander and Garlic. Another highlight that we enjoyed the most- the Teo Chew Mee Tiao. We thought it beautifully cooked with Wok Hei and they were very generous with the condiments (mainly Pork, Shallots, Sprouts and Egg).
