Originating from Singapore and known for its award-winning Hunan fare, Xiang Xiang Hunan Cuisine has landed in Penang with its first outlet on the 6th floor of Gurney Plaza. The menu isn’t large but focuses on bold, classic flavors—think Suan Cai Fish, Dual Pepper Spicy Chicken with Antler Mushroom, and Stir-Fried Pork. Prices lean a little higher, but business is brisk, with a queue expected on weekends. Bonus: free snacks and soft serve are offered while you wait.
There were only 2 of us so we opted for their signature dishes- Golden Broth Sour and Spicy Fish as well as Dual Pepper Antler Mushroom Chicken. The serving portion was huge and more than good enough to fit for 2 pax. The Sour and Spicy Fish was somewhat unique, it has a handful of Suan Cai (Pickled Mustard) in it. The broth was lightly seasoned with a mild acidity and spiciness. The fish was silky smooth and soft in texture... making it suitable for all age-range. But if you are looking for Suan Cai Fish with bold flavors, this is not necessarily the dish that you are looking for. We enjoyed the Dual Pepper Spicy Chicken Cubes with Antler Mushrooms more... great flavors with bold Peppercorn aroma. Chicken cubes were fried and well seasoned. The Antler Mushrooms offered great texture too.
