Fu Lai Pu Hotpot brings its Taiwanese-style individual hotpot concept to Penang, where each diner gets their own bubbling pot. There are five soup bases to choose from, with Ma La being a popular pick. Set meals include free-flow drinks and complimentary dessert. The air-conditioned restaurant offers a comfortable dining experience with reasonable prices. Expect big crowd on weekends though.

Every set comes with fixed amount of vegetables while the proteins will depend on your choice. Generally- choose between Beef, Pork, Chicken or Seafood with the lowest set priced from RM28 and that includes the price for the soup base and drinks. We had a few types of their soup bases and thought the Ma La version stood out the most. Unlike the Chongqing Ma La soup base with few inches-deep Oil, Fu Lai Pu's has a hint of herbaceous aroma and feels invigorating for some reasons... not overly spicy. We opted for the medium spiciness and thought it was not even spicy.

The Chicken broth was a decent choice as well. Ingredients were fresh and they were very generous with the vegetables. The Chicken Thigh set offers great values and satisfaction. For Beef lovers, we recommend going for the Australian Beef set, the meat was good. Do not bother to top up for the Fish Crisps and Tempura though, the serving portions can be miserable. Just stick to the set package for better values.
