Located just across from Mercure Hotel in Tanjung Bungah, Jiao Zi Dian 饺子掂 is a cosy, air-conditioned eatery that specializes in handmade Chinese dumplings. The place is run by a lady originally from China, now calling Penang home. While dumplings take the spotlight here, the menu also features familiar Chinese stir-fry dishes like Fried Vermicelli Noodles and Fried Rice. With its comfortable setting and wallet-friendly prices, it’s a spot worth noting for dumpling lovers.
On the dumplings- we had the blanched Chicken Dumplings. The sizes were larger than the usual ones. We could tell they were handmade due to the irregular shapes. They were very generous with the filling and the texture was overall good. The Taro Gyoza paled when in comparison with the Chicken Dumplings. Taro lovers might say otherwise, but we could not taste a hint of the Dried Shrimp as stated on the menu. It was okay on its own but a little monotonous without the addition of Dried Shrimps.
On the mains- we love the Stir Fried Vermicelli Noodles with fermented Black Beans. The Wok Hei was there and the noodles were expertly cooked and seasoned. A pity that they don't serve Sambal Belacan. Like-wise, we also enjoyed the Fried Rice with Shrimps. We thought it was a lovely Fried Rice with a delightful charred aroma. The Chili Oil Noodles with Shredded Chicken did not come as exciting as the other two, probably we were underwhelmed with the instant noodle-like noodles.
