Tucked away in one of the bungalows along Codrington Avenue (Pulau Tikus)- Flour and Oil Cafe is relatively new in the Penang cafe scene. It can be found slightly before Rose Charity along the same street, with free parking right in front of the bungalow (or behind). On the food menu- it has a mix of local delights as well as Western dishes; with a home-cooked, healthy and heart-warming touch. Seats are pretty limited at Flour and Oil Cafe, so if you are visiting in larger groups- do make early reservations. It is note-worthy that Flour and Oil Cafe is also child-friendly, pet-friendly and serves no Pork/ Lard.
It is uncommon to see Gula Apong on the menu but Flour and Oil Cafe has a few Gula Apong-related dishes. We started with Gula Apong Yogurt Bowl- a beautifully plated Yogurt Bowl consists of Chia Seeds, fresh Blueberries, Banana, Strawberries and Granola... served with Gula Apong (instead of Honey or Maple Syrup). The combo worked- with a mild, lovely smokiness from the Gula Apong that gives it a sweet touch. The same for the Gula Apong Fren Toast and we appreciate the aesthetic touch (of edible flowers and greens) which made the whole dish looked amazing. We also had the Bagel with Smoked Salmon and Sambal Hae Bi, a marriage between the East and the West. Oddly, we found the combo worked (again)! But it was cleverly served with Cream Cheese and Capers so it was a multi-dimensional dish. The Sambal Hae Bi introduced a hint of spiciness as well as the sleek sweetness to it. The Curry Chicken is a Saturday's Special. We had ours with Jeera Rice; while the Chicken was nicely cooked, we though the Curry was a little diluted to our liking.
