Manned by the fourth generation, Thum Kee Char Hor Fun 谭记炒河粉 is an old Penang food store that withstood the test of time. Their recent expansion at Jalan Presgrave is well-received and offers a more spacious, comfortable dining experience to the regular patrons. They also run a food store at Mount Erskine market and has garnered an appreciate following over the years (since 1981). Thum Kee specializes in Chinese-style Stir Fried Noodles like Char Hor Fun, Hokkien Char and the likes. This place at Jalan Presgrave is neighboring to the popular hawker place along the same street.
The Stir Fried Yee Foo Noodles left us with the deepest impression: expertly seasoned with bold Wok-Hei while maintaining the texture of the noodles. We also love the generosity of Pork Lards in this dish; we thoroughly enjoyed the dish with their home-made Sambal dip. The Oyster Noodle was not shabby either- the Oysters were fresh and plump, the rest was pretty standard but safe to say, it did not disappoint. Same for the Mee Sua Kor- great consistency, generous minced Meat and reasonably seasoned. Serving portion is small for 'small' (smaller than usual) so if you expect a reasonable portion, top up a little and go for the 'large' portion.
Taste: 7.5/10 (1-3 bad, 4-7 average, 8-10 good)
