Master Jack Pot 大街小巷 has received good reviews since its earlier this year, the Chinese restaurant at Campbell Street churns out Cantonese dishes with a modern twist. The restaurant has a standard Chinese restaurant setting but well equipped with air conditioners. It has a fairly big menu, featuring many Cantonese and Sze Chuan-inspired dishes; expect to pay restaurant-standard prices though. Find Master Jack Pot opposite to Tho Yuen and Hema Hema Ice Cream on the same street.
Our experience with the restaurant was not that great, we were disappointed with our order. Since there were only 2 of us and we could not sample a big variety. We were tempted to go for their Sizzling Chicken Pot, which has a full page coverage on the menu. It turned out to be a dish with starchy, dark-colored sauce; not sizzling but bubbling. To our dismay, the sauce barely registered any flavor (despite of the color). We could see the Peppercorns, Chilies in the sauce but could not taste even a hint of the spiciness. The Chicken was okay but they were not thorough enough in cleaning some parts of the Chicken, we found some hair on the Chicken skin. There were some Lotus Roots, Onions, Capsicum, Cabbage, Potatoes but due to the constant heating; the vegetables were basically in mushy-soft state. We struggled to finish this dish. Fortunately, the Bitter Gourd Egg was good. The Egg was perfectly done with a silky smooth texture and the Bitter Gourd was nicely executed with minimum bitterness. It was a little salty on its own but perfect to spoon over rice. Not sure if we ordered the wrong dishes but we were certainly discouraged from visiting the second time.
Taste: 6.5/10 (1-3 bad, 4-7 average, 8-10 good)
