Dainty Kitchen 老厨房 @ Raja Uda, Butterworth, Penang.

Available in both Raja Uda and Bukit Mertajam (near AEON), Dainty Kitchen 老厨房 is a popular Cantonese restaurant in mainland. It started off in Bukit Mertajam a couple years ago and expanded to Raja Uda recently; both restaurants offering the same menu. The one in Raja Uda is fairly small and only able to accommodate less than 10 tables so reservations are recommended if you plan to visit this restaurant. Dainty Kitchen's menu is not very big, offering Cantonese dishes with a modern twist. Prices are high considering the portion but the quality is there. Dainty Kitchen Raja Uda can be found right behind AEON Credit and next to Khing Cafe.

Crispy Chive and Prawn Pancake 韭菜虾饼 (Rm 28)

We started off with the Crispy Chive and Prawn Pancake- crispy outside with bouncy-Prawn paste filling inside, served with Chinese Sour Plum sauce... as simple and straight-forward as it gets, but everything was spot on. The Charcoal Crispy Tofu was equally good, the real draw was the accompanying creamy sauce. It has a citrusy hint which cuts through the greasiness. The Tofu has an airy-crisp texture, perfect for an appetizer. A classic dish- the Better Than Crab is uncommon these days. The idea is to get silky smooth egg to replace Crab meat, we had ours with a dash of Black Vinegar and it was good. A pity that we had ours cold and the Eggs were not as runny as we would have hoped. The Salted Free-Range Chicken with Aromatic was a disappointment- the Chicken was a tad too dry to our liking and the aromatics did not work. The seasoning was weak too. We had to rely on the Galangal-dip for the extra saltiness and the mild ginger flavor. Equally disappointing- the Sze Chuan Fish Fillet with Pickled Vege. The spiciness was muted and we could not taste the quintessential aroma from the Sze Chuan peppers. The Pickled Vege overpowered the dish. We unanimously agreed that the Sweet and Sour Pork with Lychee and Fruits on Ice was a clear winner. The Sweet and Sour Pork was expertly done but we are still unconvinced with the price- RM58 for the measly portion (probably 5 to 6 pieces of the Pork with some Lychee, Pineapple and Apple cubes).
